HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team scored twice in the opening 3:05 of the game on their way to a 3-2 season-opening victory over Assumption on Tuesday evening at Thompson Arena.
"It's always nice to get a win," said head coach
Liz Keady Norton. "I was excited to see the little bit of offense we generated and the amount of shots we produced. We certainly have to tighten things up, but I'm excited for the challenges that lie ahead of us and we have one win under our belt."
The Big Green (1-0-0) wasted no time to get on the board.
Izee Powell scored her first career goal just 2:19 into the first period with a shot from the blue line.
Lauren Messier and
Shae Messner picked up their first points of the year after assisting on the goal.
Dartmouth kept the momentum going, scoring just 46 seconds later.
Jenna Donohue passed the puck in front of goal to
Cally Dixon, who crashed the goal and fired the puck into the back of the net.
Assumption (0-3-0) cut into the deficit midway through the second period. Alexa Hanrahan picked up a loose puck near center ice, brought it towards the Dartmouth goal and was able to tuck it inside the left post for the first goal of the night for the Greyhounds.
Donohue scored 41 seconds into the third period to push the Big Green lead back to two goals.
Laura Fuoco won the faceoff for Dartmouth, Donohue got the puck and skated through several Assumption before firing a shot past goaltender Carissa Mudrak to make it a 3-1 game.
Sheridan Terrazzano tallied for the Greyhounds several minutes to bring the Big Green lead back down to one.
Eleanor Rogers, making her first collegiate appearance, made a crucial save with just over one minute to go to keep Dartmouth in front. Hanrahan skated her way towards goal and got off a clean shot, but a kick save from Rogers kept the puck out of the net and the Big Green in the lead.
Rogers finished the night with 25 saves to earn her first win. Mudrak made 40 saves for Assumption.
The Big Green outshot the Greyhouns, 43-27.
"I think we have a really great squad this year," said Powell after the game. "They set me up for success on the goal. I'm really proud to be a part of this team and I can't wait for the rest of the season."
