MANKATO, Minn. – The Big Green and Mavericks faced off in the regular series finale, Saturday. While the game was scoreless headed into the second period, #15 Minnesota State's offense came to life in the middle frame, scoring four en route to a 5-0 victory.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 2-9-1 overall.
The Mavericks outshot the Big Green 10-7 through the first 20 minutes, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Mankato's offense came alive in the second period, as it opened the scoring just over five minutes in. Just past the halfway mark, the Mavericks added their second goal, before burying two in the next six minutes, one on the power play, to take a 4-0 lead headed into the final period.
The Big Green did have a power play opportunity late in the second. They recorded four shots but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the third period, Mankato outshot the Big Green 10-6, despite Dartmouth have two power play opportunities. It remained a four-goal game until the final second, when Mankato tallied it's fifth goal of the game with just 0.8 seconds to play.
"Mankato is a good team, first and foremost. They make smart plays, really strong on their sticks, and when they have the opportunity, they really make it difficult on us in their zone. So, credit them with a good weekend," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about the Mavericks.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend, returning home after five straight games on the road to host RPI and Union.
"We need to be better in some specific areas," Crowell said about the focus for her team over the next week. "We talked yesterday about fixing some simple things and its finishing shifts when you get stuck in your defensive zone, playing tight defensively, being a little nastier in front of our net to make sure they don't get any sticks on pucks, especially in our rush defense. So those areas we need to clean up for sure."
Crowell reiterated that there is nothing major that her team needs to fix, just to get better at the fundamentals.
"It's not anything huge and monumental that we need to fix, it's better habits and playing as a team when things are hard, not trying to do it yourself, some of those messages," Crowell said. "So, we'll go back to work on Monday and get back after it because it is a huge weekend for us next weekend."
Puck drop on Friday, December 5 against RPI is set for 3 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+, follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com. or purchase your tickets to see the Big Green live
