HANOVER, N.H. – After five straight games away from Thompson Arena, the women's hockey team returned home, first playing host to the RPI Engineers. The Big Green scored in the third period to pull themselves within one, but RPI responded to seal the 3-1 victory over Dartmouth.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 2-10-1 and 2-6-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
Dartmouth controlled the game offensively from the start, outshooting the Engineers 7-1 in the first period. The Big Green had the lone power play opportunity of the first frame, recording three shots, but were unable to convert as the game remained scoreless headed into the second period.
The Big Green continue to pressure in the middle frame, putting 11 shots on net to the Engineers' seven. Despite the shot discrepancy, it was RPI that struck first, converting on its only power play of the game to take a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes to play in the period.
Only down by one headed into the third, Head Coach
Maura Crowell said the message to her team was to keep doing what they were doing.
"We were playing great hockey, especially for the first 40," Crowell said. "Getting pucks to net, hanging on to pucks. That was fun for us. It had been a defensive juggernaut last weekend, so we were getting a lot of offense, playing good defense and really controlling the play."
While Dartmouth was looking to find the equalizer, the Engineers wanted insurance, and they found it just past the eight-minute mark to take a 2-0 lead.
Just over five minutes later,
Meredith Jensen chipped the puck out of the defensive zone, finding
Hamilton Doster. The junior carried it through the neutral zone, beat a defender and sent a shot on net. The rebound found the stick of
Kenzington Lehman who buried it for her second goal of the season, making it a 2-1 game.
Shortly after, the Engineers responded, scoring their third goal of the game to secure the victory.
Despite the loss, Dartmouth recorded 29 shots on net, its most in a game this season, and had another 24 blocked by Engineers.
"We're not talking so much about wins and losses. We're talking about our process," Crowell said. "Our players know that that game, especially, like I said, the first two periods, was the way we want to play, the way that we're capable of playing. And it's fun hockey. It's fast and it's exciting."
The Big Green will close the weekend Saturday, December 6 against Union. Crowell said the goal for her team is to "continue to play the right way."
"We took massive steps today, and we just want to continue to climb," Crowell added.
Puck drop against the Garnet Chargers is set for 3 p.m. Saturday's game is also the Big Green's annual toy drive. Bring a new, unwrapped toy to Thompson Arena and receive a ticket voucher to a future game.
