Big Green Find a Way in 3-2 Shootout Win at Sacred Heart

Dartmouth improved to 3-1 in games this season that went to overtime
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — In a back-and-forth game, Sacred Heart twice erased Big Green leads, but the Dartmouth field hockey team was victorious in the end, beating the Pioneers 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday. Freshman Lucia Campaño was a catalyst of the offense once again, posting a goal and assist in regulation, while also converting a must-make fifth round attempt to send the shootout to sudden-victory sixth round. Before Campaño's tally, sophomore Ava Carlson made an incredible save to keep the Big Green alive. Carlson stopped denied four of the six shooters in the shootout, including each of the last three.
"[Going into overtime], I was thinking that we got this," said Carlson. "I feel like after being on this field on Friday and being in the same situation, we knew what to expect and knew how we were going to feel going into it. We used that to our advantage, we took all the shots we could and came out really strong."
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 5-7; the five wins are already its most victories in a season since 2018. Sacred Heart falls to 3-10.
"Today was a game where we really had everything," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "We went ahead, they got back equal, we went ahead again, then they came back equal. We had a moment we thought could have been a penalty stroke. We had overtime, we had shootouts, sudden victory and another stroke.
"Today was a game that expanded and tested us in a lot of ways," Egner continued. "Credit to the team; they gritted it out and found a way to win. They created opportunities for themselves throughout. We're proud of them for that. Ultimately, we have to learn how to win in these tough situations and today was an example of that."
The Big Green held a 10-1 edge in shots over the two overtime periods, including 7-1 in the second 10 minutes, but couldn't net the game-winning goal. After sophomore Olivia Galiotos made Dartmouth's first attempt, the Big Green missed on their next three. Sacred Heart took a 2-1 lead into its fifth attempt, which saw Madelyn Kidd make a strong move to get herself free, but Carlson recovered to make an incredible diving save with her glove hand, giving Dartmouth a chance.
"Ava is somebody who we know can really do well in 1v1 moments," said Egner. "She's quite agile, she's athletic and she's really able to move on her feet. She's really composed going into those and there's no doubts. I was really confident in her abilities and I think she really lived up to that confidence today."
Campaño scored the game's only first-half goal, firing a beautiful reverse shot past Sacred Heart goalkeeper Brianna Cooper at the 27:11 mark.
Campaño struck again with less than five minutes left in regulation, as she carried at the end line, getting herself free and centering to classmate Riley Dumigan, who gave the Big Green a 2-1 lead.
The Big Green controlled the extra sessions, forcing Cooper to make two saves in each overtime period, which set the stage for the shootout.
Final shots were 19-9 in favor of Dartmouth while behind five penalty corners in the second overtime, the Big Green finished with a 9-8 edge in corners. Carlson finished with three saves in regulation before her multiple saves in the shootout. Cooper tallied seven for the Pioneers.
The Big Green return to action on Saturday when they host Princeton for a big Ivy League showdown. Gametime is set for 11 a.m. on ESPN+. Dartmouth then heads to No. 17 UMass on Sunday to face the Minutemen at 1 p.m.
