BURLINGTON, N.C. — In a field littered with low scores,
Alex Gu provided Dartmouth's best showing on Tuesday in the third and final round of the Elon Phoenix Invitational, carding a 1-under 70 with four birdies to his credit. The senior's performance led the Big Green to a 9-over 293 today as they wrapped up the tournament in 15th place and concluded their fall schedule.
Rich Parker, Dartmouth's Bill Johnson Head Coach of Men's Golf, received bad news before the round even began as sophomore
Fin Szafnauer was unable to complete the event due to an injury. That left Dartmouth with just four golfers for the final 18 with no wiggle room for error by any players.
Starting on the back nine, Gu quickly responded to the challenge, sinking a birdie on 11. He was back at even par when he reached the turn, then birdied the first hole on the 6,871-yard, par-71 course at Alamance Country Club. Consecutive bogeys on the next two holes set him back, but he rebounded with birdies on two of his last four holes to finish the day under par and close out the tournament at 3-over with a 216, good for a tie for 44th.
Freshman
Tyler Brand was Dartmouth's top finisher for the event in a tie for 24th with a 2-under 211 after shooting a 72 (+1) today. He was slow out of the gate, falling to 3-over on the day through seven. His final 11 holes, however, went unblemished with nine pars and birdies on 1 and 4 finish the tournament strong.
Sophomore
Aaron Zhang rarely wavered from hole to hole, making par on 15 of the 18 holes. His 3-over par 74 left him at 9-over for the three rounds, tied for 70th. And junior
Justin Lee was able to drop one birdie in his round of 77 (+6).
Host Elon, which entered the final round two strokes behind Western Carolina on the leaderboard, ran away from the 16-team field today by shooting a 13-under 271 for the second straight round. The Phoenix finished at 31-under par while the Catamounts claimed second at 21-under, seven strokes ahead of Presbyterian and Radford in a tie for third.
Presbyterian's Jack Wofford was able to hold off Appalachian State's Addison Beam for medalist honors with a 66 (-5) today to win by three strokes at 14-under overall. A total of 29 participants ended the tournament under par.
Dartmouth will return to the links in the spring.
