HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but RPI stormed back to win in overtime, 5-4, on Friday evening in ECAC Hockey action at Thompson Arena. The Big Green move to 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league while the Engineers improve to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
"We came out really strong and then sort of hit a lull in the middle there," said head coach
Liz Keady Norton. "We need to be able to put 60 minutes together, so we have a lot to learn from the game and hopefully build for tomorrow."
Cally Dixon scored a power-play goal to give the Big Green a 4-3 lead with 7:40 remaining in the third. With time winding down, RPI pulled their goaltender with a few minutes to go after the game-tying goal with an extra attacker. The Engineers tallied the equalizer with 1:32 left in regulation and ultimately forced overtime. In overtime, Isabelle Hardy scored the game-winning goal to give RPI the win in its league opener.
After Dartmouth took a 3-0 lead early in the second period, the Engineers tallied three goals in the period to tie it at 3-3 going into the third. RPI scored its first goal of the night just over eight minutes into the middle frame through Andrea Trnkova. Ellie Kaiser scored just under four minutes later to make it a one-goal game, and then Taylor Larsen scored a power-play goal with 16 seconds remaining in the period.
Jenna Donohue opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest. After intercepting an Engineers pass in the Big Green defensive zone, Donohue brought the puck down to the other end of the ice, shifting her through several RPI defenders before firing a shot into the back of the net for her third goal in as many games.
Dartmouth added to the lead later in the period, once again through Donohue. After blocking a shot from RPI,
Olivia Paidosh immediately got the puck, skating down the ice before putting a pass forward to Donohue. Donohue won the race against the Engineers defender and quickly ripped a shot past RPI goaltender Amanda Rampado for second goal of the game.
The Big Green added a third goal early in the second period on the power play.
Annie King's shot from the blue line was saved by Rampado, but
Shae Messner followed up on the loose puck just outside the crease to tap it home for her first collegiate goal.
The Big Green outshot the Engineers, 39-38.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow afternoon for an ECAC Hockey tilt against Union. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
