HANOVER, N.H. — Just seconds after what looked like a potential Dartmouth goal was waved off, the Big Green scored on the 5-on-3 to take a 1-0 lead, but Union netted the equalizer midway through the third period as Saturday's game ended in a 1-1 tie inside Thompson Arena.
Cally Dixon scored a goal for a second straight day while freshman
Eleanor Rogers made a career-high 35 saves in goal. The Big Green are now 2-1-1 on the season, 1-1-1 in ECAC play. Union's record goes to 4-5-1 and 1-0-1 in the conference.
"We had to work for it," said head coach
Liz Keady Norton. "There were a lot of special teams [on display]. At different times, I probably would like to see more discipline and focus throughout, but a lot of positives in terms of the grit, blocking shots, the pace we're playing with and a lot of young kids getting into the mix."
The Big Green finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play while Union was 1-for-7, including a 4-on-3 power play in overtime. Rogers kicked away seven shots in the extra session to give Dartmouth a chance until the very end.
Union controlled play in the first period, holding a 12-5 edge in shots, but neither Rogers nor Garner Chargers' goalkeeper Sophie Matsoukas allowed a shot to get past them.
That trend continued in the second period until late in the stanza. Dartmouth thought it had taken a 1-0 lead on an
Izee Powell shot from the point, which got behind Matsoukas, but was off the post. It didn't matter as off the ensuing faceoff,
Kenzie Bachelor put the puck towards goal where Dixon finished it off to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead heading to the third.
"That power play unit was due," said Keady Norton. "They've had a number of really positive, grade A chances and opportunities so it's nice that it paid off. I didn't have any doubt in them."
Union used a third-period power play to pull even as Rogers made an initial save on a Maddie Leaney shot, but Emily King wouldn't be denied on the rebound.
Due to an early overtime 4-on-3 power play, the Garnet Chargers controlled play for much of the period, but Rogers and the Dartmouth defense stood tall to keep Union's tally at one.
Final shots were 36-20 in favor of Union.
"We're seeing a lot of compete," said Keady Norton. "We're seeing a lot of second-effort plays and I think we're seeing a team that's starting to believe in themselves. They're looking left and right and realizing how capable they are."
Dartmouth now hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Brown and Yale. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday, both on ESPN+.
"We have a really great group," said Dixon. "Everyone works really hard, and I think we're going to go some great places. We just need to keep at it and get better every day. That's what we're doing. We just have to learn from everything that has happened this weekend and get better. Take the good, work on the bad and everything in between."
