DURHAM, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling to Granite State rival UNH, 3-1, on Saturday evening at the Whittemore Center. Both teams scored on the power play, while the Wildcats utilized a two-goal second period to put themselves ahead going into the third.
Dartmouth falls to 0-1-1 on the season while UNH improves to 4-1-0.
"I thought we ran into a really good New Hampshire team that's playing really good hockey," said Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey
Reid Cashman. "Thought we made too many mistakes, but I'm happy with our third period and it was a big power-play goal for us."
The Wildcats opened the scoring early in the middle frame. Nick Ring received a pass just outside the crease and created some space to find an opening to put a shot past
Cooper Black to go up 1-0. UNH added a second midway through the period, this time on the power play. Colton Huard's initial shot was blocked by
Eric Charpentier, but Huard got the puck back and scored on a follow up shot to put the Wildcats ahead by two.
Dartmouth scored early in the third period, scoring its first power play goal of the season. The Big Green worked the puck around, getting several shots early in the advantage.
Cam MacDonald and
Ian Pierce played short quick passes before Pierce passed it out to
John Fusco, who fired a shot through the UNH defense that tucked into the top corner of the net, cutting the Wildcats' lead down to one.
UNH responded just minutes later when Harrison Blaisdell found a pocket of space in the middle and was able to get off a clean shot just a few feet from goal, getting it past Black to push their lead back to two.
The Big Green went with the empty net in the final few minutes. The Wildcats almost capitalized immediately, but Dartmouth blocked several shots before regaining possession of the puck. Dartmouth then had a series of blocked and saved shots over the remaining few minutes as they looked to cut into the deficit.
Dartmouth returns to ECAC Hockey action next weekend at Thompson Arena against Quinnipiac and Princeton. Puck drop against the Bobcats on Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m. while Saturday's game against the Tigers is slated for 7 p.m. Both games will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet. Season and single-game tickets are available for purchase through the Dartmouth Athletics ticket office.
