HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team twice overcame a deficit before earning a shootout victory over No. 8 Quinnipiac on Friday evening at Thompson Arena. The two teams skated to a 2-2 tie, with
Nikita Nikora scoring the lone goal of the shootout to give the Big Green the extra point in the standings. Sophomore goaltender
Cooper Black stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout.
"It's our second ECAC Hockey game, getting points in both games against Harvard and Quinnipiac, traditionally two of the top teams in our league," said Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey
Reid Cashman. "That's extremely important as we look to have growth with our team and our program."
After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, Dartmouth (0-1-2, 0-0-2) saw themselves entering a shootout for the second straight home game after having an NCAA record 18-round shootout last week in the season opener. This time around was much better for the home team.
Both teams were unable to score in the first two rounds of the best-of-three shootout. Then, up stepped Nikora, who created the opening to get around Quinnipiac goaltender Vinny Duplessis and put the shot into the back of the net. Jacob Quillan had the chance to equalize for Quinnipiac, but his attempt was unsuccessful, giving the Big Green the extra point.
Quinnipiac (4-3-1, 0-0-1) opened the scoring midway through the first period to take a 1-0 lead. After gaining possession of the puck at center ice, Travis Treloar and Mason Marcellus played a quick give-and-go before Treloar was able to shoot it past Black to put the Bobcats ahead.
The Big Green tied things up just minutes later when
Oskari Vuorio passed the puck forward towards goal, and an out-stretched
Joey Musa was able to get his stick on the end of the puck to direct it into the net for his first goal of the season.
Eric Charpentier had the second assist on the goal, giving himself and Vuorio their first collegiate points.
The Bobcats regained the lead early in the second period through Cristophe Tellier. After the Big Green just killed off a penalty, Tellier followed up on a rebound in front of goal to tap in the go-ahead goal.
Luke Haymes scored his first goal of the 2023-24 season after crashing the net to follow up on a shot from Nikora, tying the game once again.
Black made 38 saves in goal for the Big Green, while the team combined to block 17 shots. Charpentier led the way with four.
"It was awesome and an unbelievable atmosphere," said Charpentier. "We just have to keep moving our feet, outworking teams and putting the work in, and as long as we are doing that then the results will come."
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow evening for an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League tilt against Princeton. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet. Season and single-game tickets are available through the Dartmouth Athletics ticket office.
