HANOVER, N.H. – CJ Foley scored the game-winning goal with under one minute to go as the Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Princeton, 5-4, in front of nearly 3,000 fans at Thompson Arena on Saturday evening.
Â
With the game tied at 4-4 and another potential overtime game on the horizon, the Big Green made a late push for the winner.
Cam MacDonald's shot was saved, and the rebound fell perfectly in front of Foley with an open goal in his path. Foley smashed the puck into the goal and the Thompson faithful erupted as Dartmouth took a 5-4 lead.
"We fed off the crowd tonight and it was an unbelievable atmosphere," said Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey
Reid Cashman. "This is how we want Thompson Arena to be… To get five out of six points for the weekend is great."
Â
The Big Green (1-1-2, 1-0-2) held a 4-2 advantage going into the third period. Princeton (0-1-1, 0-1-1) cut into the deficit just 44 seconds into the period. The Tigers scored late in the period, with under two minutes to go after pulling Arthur Smith to go with the extra attacker.
Â
It was an exciting start to the game, as each team scored twice inside the opening five minutes of the contest.
CJ Foley scored his first collegiate goal at the 2:52 mark when he fired a shot past Princeton goaltender Ethan Pearson into the net to put the Big Green ahead, 1-0.
Â
The Tigers tied the game up less than a minute later on the power play, taking advantage of the 5v4 opportunity after Dartmouth was handed a delay of game penalty. Kai Daneills was positioned just outside the crease to redirect a shot into the back of the net.
Â
The Big Green regained the lead moments later when
Luke Haymes wrapped the puck around the front of goal, scoring his second goal in as many nights.
Â
After Dartmouth was handed another delay of game penalty, Princeton once again took advantage as Tyler Rubin followed up on the saved shot from Nick Seitz, tying the game after just 18 seconds.
Â
Dartmouth scored two power play goals early in the second period to take a two-goal lead.
Braiden Dorfman tallied the first one. His initial shot was saved, but he immediately followed up with another shot and this time, it sailed through the defense and past Smith into the back of the net.
Â
Joey Musa scored the second power play goal of the period of the game. Musa lasered in a shot from the right faceoff circle, scoring for the second-straight game.
Â
Nikita Nikora, Dorfman and Foley all finished with three points. Nikora had three assists, while Foley scored two and assisted one and Dorfman tallied one goal and two assists.
Â
Cooper Black made 25 saves in net to earn his first win of the season.
"I was lucky enough to tap it in, there was a lot of chain of events working into that, but we wanted to win that game and we got the result we were looking for," said Foley.
Dartmouth hits the road next weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests at Cornell and Colgate. The Big Green take on the Big Red on Friday evening before squaring off with the Raiders on Saturday. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the games will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
