ITHACA, N.Y. – John Fusco scored two goals in the second period for the Dartmouth men's hockey team as they tied No. 7 Cornell, 2-2, in ECAC Hockey action on Friday evening at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, New York.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime, the Big Red won the ensuing shootout, 2-1, after Dalton Bancroft and Gabriel Seger converted their shots.
Braiden Dorfman scored the lone shootout goal for the Big Green.
Dartmouth moves to 1-1-3 overall with a 1-0-3 ECAC Hockey record while Cornell now sits at 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, both teams scored twice in the middle frame, including one power play goal each.
Cornell opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the second period. The Big Red capitalized on a Big Green turnover in their defensive zone, and Jonathan Castagna immediately set up Bancroft for the quick release shot that went past Big Green goaltender
Cooper Black into the back of the net to give Cornell a 1-0 lead early in the frame.
Dartmouth answered minutes later as Fusco scored quickly after a faceoff win from the right circle.
Luke Haymes won the faceoff, and
Nikita Nikora quickly passed it to Fusco, who fired a shot from the blue line that beat Big Red goaltender Ian Shane low to his right side to tie the game.
The Big Green took the lead with just under five minutes to go in the period with their fourth power play goal of the year. There was a scrum around the goal as a shot from
Sean Chisholm from close range was saved by Shane, but the rebound was loose and there for the taking. Fusco was the one able to get his stick on it, forcing the puck into the net to put Dartmouth ahead.
The Big Red scored the game-tying goal with less than a minute remaining until the second intermission. Tim Rego scored off a pass from Ben Robertson from behind the net. Rego put his shot into the right side of the net past Black to tie the game.
Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal in the final 20 minutes of regulation, forcing the 3v3 overtime period.
