PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team wrapped up a successful fall on Sunday with a strong effort at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie. The Big Green had four entries in both the open eights and fours. Sunday featured a single three-mile race for each event in a time trial format.
"The mindset for coming down to the chase was a chance to measure up against the top teams, especially Princeton and Penn, and get a sense of where we are relative to that group and just get back to work," said Dartmouth head coach John Graves. "We got a data point and now we want to go into the winter and get back to work with that in mind."
In the open eights, the Big Green "A" boat was the first to finish, posting a time of 15:17.598, which was good for 15th overall out of 54 finishers. The Big Green's "B" boat wasn't far behind, placing 16th with a time of 15:19.997.
"The JV boat finishing a couple seconds behind the varsity was notable and really close to some of the other top JVs," said Graves. "That was definitely a good performance and bodes well for the future."
The Big Green's "C" and "D" boats came in 33rd and 42nd with times of 15:57.468 and 16:19.812, respectively.
Dartmouth also had four entries in the fours, which was led by the Big Green's "B" boat coming in 15th overall out of 31 with a time of 16:58.081. The "A" boat was two places and barely over a second behind, with a time of 16:59.584. The Big Green's "C" and "D" boats posted times of 17:22.950 and 17:52.580, which was 22nd and 28th overall.
Dartmouth now heads into the winter with strong momentum after Graves' first fall as head coach.
"It has been a couple months of working on rowing a certain way technically and training a certain way," said Graves. "Today, we wanted to put all those things to a test in a race environment and see how they held up under stress. We will be back in Princeton for the Ivy Invite in the spring, so we wanted to get used to the travel and the whole process of getting down here. Getting on this lake and performing was important for us to practice as well.
"A theme of the fall is just wanting to be really honest about where we are," Graves continued. "As long as we're honest, we'll start making progress. Today was about measuring up against those teams and now we can get back to work."
