BOSTON — The Dartmouth women's rowing team raced five crews at the 61st Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. The varsity four was the second-fastest collegiate crew in the women's championship fours, and the first varsity eight placed sixth among collegiate crews in the women's championship eights.

"Racing two eights and a four in the Champ events was an ambitious step up for the team, and I am very proud of the way our team stepped up to the challenge today," head coach John Graves said.

The varsity four led the way Sunday, finishing fifth out of 19 crews overall in the women's championship fours with a time of 17:40.843. Only one collegiate crew finished ahead of the Big Green.

"The four has been moving really well in training, but their performance today was on another level," Graves said. "Coach Eileen Russell has done an exceptional job with them."

In the women's championship eights, the first varsity eight (15:33.539) finished 12th out of 32 crews and sixth among collegiate entries. The second varsity eight (16:26.089) placed 27th overall and fourth in the junior varsity division.

"This was the deepest Champ 8 field I can remember, and racing in this environment was a great pressure test of our crews," Graves said. "It's early days in terms of our yearlong process, but I'm encouraged by the way both crews held their own."

On Saturday, the club eight finished 16th in a field of 41 crews in the women's club eights with a time of 17:40.296. The club four placed 29th out of 48 boats in the women's club fours with a time of 20:39.697.
