CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team opened the spring season with strong success in Boston Saturday as six Big Green boats hit the water, which saw multiple victories over Boston University and the second varsity four topping both Northeastern and BU. The wins over the Terriers are impressive, as they tied Navy for the most points in last season's Patriot League Championship.
"Last year at this time, we went down to BU and got swept, so to be able to come out with four wins against BU was really good, especially in the varsity was great," said head coach
John Graves. "That was really positive. We're definitely happy the varsity was able to lead the race to the 750m point, which was a focus for us and they executed."
In the end, Harvard won the varsity eight with a time of 6:47.6, followed by Northeastern (6:48.8), Dartmouth (6:57.7) and Boston University (6:58.5).
"It was good to see our varsity eight have some starting speed," said Graves. "Now, we need to figure out how to extend that out."
Dartmouth's varsity four posted a time of 7:52.2, ahead of Boston University's 7:56.2. The second varsity four recorded a time of 7:55.2, ahead of Northeastern (7:57.2) and BU (8:44.0), only trailing Harvard (7:37.6).
The Big Green's third varsity eight also beat the Terriers, posting a time of 7:19.1 to BU's 7:26.5 while trailing Harvard (7:04.6) and Northeastern (7:14.8).
"The depth of the team is building quite a bit and there's great competition in our lower boats," said Graves. "That depth will help build the program up. We were so happy to give them an opportunity to race. It was encouraging to see the quality of the rowing, even in our lower boats, as they've improved quite a bit. We're thrilled of the progress of that group. Credit to assistant coaches Merritt (Denham) and Kendall (Brewer) for having developed that group so far."
The Big Green return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Ivy Invite in Princeton, N.J.
"The team did a good job of racing hard and enjoying the racing today," said Graves. "We were definitely pleased with the way the team raced. Especially being a team that hasn't been on the water as much as some other schools, we're excited to keep building from here."
