CANTON, N.Y. – Special teams was the difference tonight as St. Lawrence scored two short-handed goals to down the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 3-1, in ECAC Hockey action on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
It was the first conference loss of the season for the Big Green, who now stand at 2-1-3 in league play and 2-3-3 overall. St. Lawrence improves to 4-10-1 overall and 2-3-0 in ECAC Hockey.
"I thought the effort was there, but I thought we lacked execution in really important areas," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "We needed to get to the net a little bit more and we needed to find ways to get pucks to the net."
The Saints tallied two goals in the second period to take a two-goal lead. The first came midway through the period when Justin Paul had a clear lane to goal after St. Lawrence won a faceoff in their own defensive zone and immediately pushed forward. Paul tucked his shot into the top corner for the hosts' second short-handed goal of the night. They pushed the lead to two Felikss Gavars was able to sneak one past Black minutes later through a crowded net front.
Trailing 1-0 in the first, the Big Green tied it up later in the period when
Nate Morgan tallied his first goal of the season.
Ian Pierce took a shot from the point that was saved by St. Lawrence goaltender Ben Kraws. Kraws was unable to hold onto it, which led to a loose puck in front of the net. Morgan crashed the goal and was able to get his stick to it first, putting it home for the equalizer.
CJ Foley claimed the second assist on the goal.
The Saints scored early in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. On a Dartmouth power play, St. Lawrence forced a turnover and was able to spring Jan Lasak forward for a 1v1 against goaltender
Cooper Black. Lasak's shot beat Black to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence held a slight edge in shots on goal, 30-29.
Black made 27 saves in net for the Big Green.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow for an ECAC Hockey tilt against Clarkson. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
