MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Dartmouth women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring with the conclusion of the shortened Columbia Classic on Monday, carding a 313 (+25) on the day to finish in 11th place in the 14-team field at 47-over par (623). Texas Tech took the team title at 5-under, edging out Princeton by five strokes.
With the cancellation of the scheduled second round yesterday due to excessively windy conditions, the tournament was shortened to just two rounds. Three Big Green freshmen posted a 6-over 78 today, one of whom was
Hope Hall, who provided the team's best overall score with an 8-over 152, tying for 36th place.
"Everyone was battling the wind throughout the tournament," said
Alex Kirk, the Carolyn A. Pelzel '54a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "Our ball striking was good again, but we have homework to do on course management on the par 5 holes to capitalize on scoring as well as our short game. But this is why we are here — to train and compete on our road to the Ivy Championship in April."
The day began with a shotgun start on the 6,357-yard, par-72 course at Duran Golf Club, with Hall (starting on the seventh) making par on each of her first six holes. She completed her 18 with 10 pars and a pair of birdies, giving her a team-best five over the two rounds.
Iris Cao also carded a 78 on the day while sinking a team-high three birdies to go with nine pars. With her 77 (+5) on Saturday, she was able to tie for 49th in the 80-player field at 11-over par.
Then there was
Sophie Thai who led the Green with 11 pars in her round of 78. She added a birdie on the 375-yard, par-4 fifth hole to her ledger, her third of the weekend, and tied for 58th overall with a 14-over 158.
Sophomore
Claire Xu nearly matched Thai with 10 pars and a birdie as she scored a 79 (+7) today and finished at 15-over par in a tie for 60th. Completing the Dartmouth entourage was freshman
Kim Shen, two strokes behind Xu in a tie for 62nd place.
Three players tied for medalist honors at 2-under par (142): Princeton's Yanjun Liu and Catherine Rao, along with Texas Tech's Linyu Dong. Two other golfers finished under par, both of whom were Red Raiders.
The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25, for the Ford Invitational hosted by Yale at the Ford Field & River Club in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
