OSPREY, Fla. — Lightning delayed the third and final round of the Harvard Invitational at The Oaks Club on Sunday, leaving only enough time for the eight women's golf teams to play nine holes. Dartmouth, which entered the day in second place, carded a 150 (+6) on the par-36, 3,052-yard front nine to conclude the tournament at 17-over and in fourth place, 12 strokes behind the leader, Lynn.
Harvard and Princeton both shot a 2-under 142 to surpass the Big Green in the team standings with the Crimson claiming second with a 10-over 733 and the Tigers third at 13-over.
"While we could have used a few more birdies today, I was very happy overall with the weekend," said
Alex Kirk, the Carolyn A. Pelzel '54a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "We showed we can compete with anyone in the Ivy League on any given day."
Freshman
Sophie Thai and junior
Katherine Sung were the leaders for Dartmouth during the shortened round as each shot even par. Thai, who tied for fourth overall at 1-under par, birdied the 343-yard, par-4 fifth hole — her eighth of the tournament — and bogeyed the ninth for her 36. Sung, meanwhile, dropped a pair of birdies on five and seven to make up for her back-to-back bogeys on two and three. The co-captain tied for 14th in the 47-player field with a 4-over 184.
The other contributing scores to the Big Green total were provided by sophomore
Claire Xu and freshman
Kim Shen, who produced six pars and three bogeys on the day. Xu ended up tied for 21st at 8-over par with Shen tied for 30th at 11-over.
Senior co-captain
Samantha Yao, who had the second most pars of any golfer, was 5-over on the day and 10-over for the tournament to tie for 26th.
Junior
Penelope Tir played as an individual and finished among the top 10, one stroke ahead of Sung at 3-over par after shooting a 2-over 38 on the day. She led the Big Green with nine birdies during the tournament, adding four during her roller-coaster ride over the final nine holes.
Lynn's Maria Hoyos took medalist honors by four strokes, carding an 8-under 172 with a dozen birdies to her credit. Catherine Rao of Princeton and Katharina Hesse of Rollins tied for second at 4-under.
Dartmouth has one final tune-up before the Ivy League Championship as it travels to Annapolis, Maryland, next weekend for the Navy Spring Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club. The first two rounds are on Saturday with the third round scheduled for Sunday morning.
