PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team wrapped up its weekend at the Ivy Invite on Sunday with strong efforts against some of the region's and nation's top crews. It was a busier morning than originally scheduled after the second session on Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather. In each of Dartmouth's first races of the day, the Big Green finished ahead of Ivy League rival Cornell.
"This was our third and fourth races of the season, and every opportunity we get to get on the race course, the women on the team are making adjustments to their race plans," said Dartmouth head coach
Nancy LaRocque. "They executed the race plans better today in racing three times in one weekend with a pretty tight turnaround. We had to condense the schedule today, but they felt really positive about all the races."
On Sunday, the Varsity Eight finished second in its first race, posting a time of 6:33.4, which was behind Southern California (6:24.1) and ahead of Cornell (6:44.7). In its second race, the Big Green came in third (6:59.8) behind Brown (6:26.7) and Virginia (6:33.9).
Meanwhile, the Second Varsity Eight also came in second in its first race (6:51.6), behind Southern Cal (6:41.9) and ahead of Cornell (6:54.4). Dartmouth's 2V placed third in its second race, recording a time of 7:07.8.
"The Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight had good races in terms of margins against the other crews out there," said LaRocque. "A lot of teams we faced this weekend are ranked in the top 10 in the country. These are the heavy hitters in women's NCAA rowing. We wanted to go up against these other women and not be nervous or scared for that competition, but to see how they can get better and how they can close the gap."
The Varsity Four came in second in its first race (7:36.0), ahead of Cornell (7:40.8) and trailing Southern Cal (7:15.7). The Third Varsity Eight got on the course for the first time this weekend and went on to finish ahead of the Big Red as well in its first race. Southern Cal came in first (7:15.7), ahead of the Big Green (7:36.0) and Cornell (7:40.8). For Dartmouth's complete results from all the racing, please see below.
The Big Green return to action on Saturday as they host UMass and MIT at Lake Morey in Fairlee, Vermont.
"We only have five more races in the season," said LaRocque. "We're going to get home and pick up right where they left off last week and continue the hard work. Excited for the home race this coming weekend while continuing to get faster and making our race plans better."
