WORCESTER, Mass. — The Dartmouth softball team dropped a close contest to Holy Cross in a non-conference contest. The Big Green fell by a score of 2-1 in the mid-week game in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Rachel McCarroll allowed just two earned runs and struck out four batters over the course of a strong performance in the circle.
Â
Mary Beth Cahalan batted in Dartmouth's (12-21) lone run of the game in the first inning. Five different batters registered hits for the Big Green on Tuesday. Holy Cross (15-32-1) picked up its fourth win of the season at Freshman Field.
Â
How it happened:
The Big Green jumped out of the gate strong, placing runners on first and second following a leadoff walk which was followed by a single from
Lauren Ben-Ezra. Dartmouth advanced the runners and Cahalan brought in
Ashley Frantz with an RBI groundout to third.
Â
McCarroll opened her afternoon in style, recording a trio of strikeouts to retire the side. The Big Green and Crusaders were unable to put up runs in the second frame.
Â
Dartmouth loaded the bases in the third with one away. A walk and a pair of singles gave the Big Green an opportunity to extend their lead. Holy Cross forced a flyout and groundout as Dartmouth left the bases juiced.
Â
The Crusaders jumped in front of Dartmouth in the bottom of the third. A walk and a double put runners on second and third with none away. After a flyout, Holy Cross capitalized on the scoring opportunity, as a double to left center field put Dartmouth behind by a score of 2-1.
Â
The Big Green were unable to equalize the contest in the top of the fourth, despite a leadoff single from Frantz. Holy Cross placed two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but Dartmouth's defense was up to the task as the score remained stagnant.
Â
Dartmouth was retired in order in the top of the fifth, which gave the Crusaders a chance to extend their one-run lead. The Big Green would not allow the deficit to grow, as Holy Cross left a pair of runners stranded in the back half of the fifth.
Â
Holy Cross maintained its lead over the Big Green to secure the mid-week victory. The Crusaders improved to 6-3 all-time against Dartmouth.
