BOSTON — The Dartmouth women's rowing team opened its spring season with a solid performance on Saturday at Boston University. The Third Varsity Eight posted the closest margin, just 0.8 seconds behind the Terriers, as Boston University won all four races on the morning.
"Having been on the water for only four weeks, this race served as a valuable learning experience for the team, highlighting areas of strength and things we can improve," said Dartmouth head coach
Nancy LaRocque. "The team will use this feedback to make changes, tweak their race plans and grow stronger as a unit. They remain undaunted and motivated to continue working hard to improve."
The day began with the Varsity Four posting a time of 8:10.6, behind two Terrier boats that finished in 7:58.2 and 8:05.7. In the Second Varsity Eight, BU came in first (7:15.4) followed by the Big Green (7:28.1). The Varsity Eight was next, with Dartmouth's time of 7:15.8 behind the Terriers' finish of 7:02.9.
The morning ended with a tight race in the Third Varsity Eight, as Boston University finished in 7:23.9, less than a second ahead of the Big Green (7:24.7).
"There is excitement around the 3V because it was the first 2000-meter race for first-year athletes
Amaya Bonn (coxswain),
Emma Borchers and
Annika Colberg," said LaRocque. "All three women began their rowing careers with Dartmouth in September. Additionally, they were joined by coxswain-turned-rower
Maia Crichlow and more seasoned rowers (senior Maddie Grussing, juniors
Katherine Figura,
Emma Troost and
Audrey Craighead, and freshman
Lily Chabica)."
The Big Green will return to action next weekend at the Ivy Invite at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
"For our first race of the 2023 season, we were pleased with how each boat executed its race plan," said LaRocque. "The weather was chilly, and the steady headwind sometimes created challenging conditions.
"We are proud of the progress everyone has made to date and are looking forward to a focused week of training as we prepare for the Ivy Invite."
