WORCESTER, Mass. – The Dartmouth women's rowing team ended its season on a strong note on Sunday, as the Ivy League Championship featured plenty of highlights for the Big Green. Dartmouth placed two boats in grand finals (Second and Third Varsity Eights), a strong sign of the program's improvement after not placing any boats in grands last season. Two crews also won their petite finals on Sunday.
"Across the board, it was a great day for Dartmouth women's rowing," said head coach
Nancy LaRocque. "The Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight raced above their seed (they were seeded seventh). It was a huge improvement over last year. We're just taking steps every year to get a little faster. Having continually better races is going to keep adding up to better performances year after year.
"That's how we're going to get faster, one good race at a time."
The morning was highlighted by the Second Varsity Eight beating Columbia in its heat, and coming back to do so. Trailing by a few seats early on, the Big Green made their move to finish third in their heat with a time of 6:29.701, just under three seconds ahead of the Lions (6:32.036) to qualify for grands.
Not long after, the Third Varsity Eight followed suit by finishing in 6:40.445, topping Harvard who came in at 6:43.275 to earn the coveted spot in the grand final.
"Those are both crews that we haven't beaten in a long time and especially with beating Columbia in the 2V, that was a huge race for us getting to the grand final," said LaRocque. "The girls had gritty races and that's what's going to help us get faster."
In the afternoon, the Varsity Eight earned a convincing victory over Cornell, posting a time of 6:29.174 compared to the Big Red's 6:36.619. The Varsity Four also beat Cornell in the petite final (7:31.821 compared to 7:34.334).

As a team, Dartmouth finished in seventh place overall with 25 points. Princeton won the Ivy League team championship with 85 points followed by Yale in second with 84. All-Ivy League honorees were also announced with senior
Lucy Handy being named to the first team and junior
Jenna Martin to the second team.
After a successful year, the Big Green are excited to get back to work for an even more successful Ivy League Championship in 2024.
"We'll go back to work for next year," said LaRocque. "To keep making these improvements, the team is going to commit to a summer of training, then get going again in the fall."
