HANOVER, N.H. — The NCAA announced the selections for the 2023 NCAA Championship preliminary meets on Thursday afternoon, and six student-athletes from the Dartmouth men's track and field team were among the field to compete in the East preliminary.
Freshman
J'Voughnn Blake will run in the 800m race, the lone track event for the Big Green. The throwers will feature heavily for Dartmouth as freshman
Max Klein will compete in shot put while senior
Jake Dalton, sophomore
Ben Pable, and junior
Michael Gabriel will compete in the hammer throw. Senior
Nils Wildberg will take part in long jump.
To qualify for the preliminaries in individual events, student-athletes must be among the top 48 for their event that declared for the meet.
Blake qualified for the 800m race in just his second time running the event during the outdoor season for the Big Green. Blake's time of 1:48.42 at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational at the end of March puts him 28
th on the list of competitors heading into next week.
Klein, a second team All-Ivy honoree, is 36
th in shot put with a throw of 18.00m, coming in the George Davis Invitational in mid-April.
Dalton, a second-team All-Ivy honoree and program record holder for the hammer throw, ranks 20
th going into the East preliminaries. Dalton's throw of 65.39m came at the Duke Invitational in early April. Pable and Gabriel moved up the hammer throw rankings after competing at the New England Outdoor Championships this past weekend. Pable enters the week ranked 41
st with a throw of 61.49m and Gabriel sits 43
rd with a mark of 61.28m.
Wildberg earns his spot at the East regional after posting a mark of 7.51m at the UConn Northeast Challenge in mid-April. He enters the event at No. 45.
Competition begins next Wednesday at the University of North Florida, and the NCAA East Regional Preliminary will be available to stream on ESPN+, with live results being provided by the NCAA.
