Lightweight Rowing Competes at Day One of IRA National Regatta

The Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 8 move on to the grand finals

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Dartmouth lightweight rowing team opened competition at the IRA National Regatta on Friday on the waters of Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. While the day was cut short due to the heat index in New Jersey, the Big Green's Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 8 have progressed to contest in the grand finals later this weekend.

The day started early as the second varsity 8 boat kicked things off at 8:00 a.m. with Heat 1, which served as the race to determine lanes in the grand final on Sunday. The Big Green finished seventh with a time of 6:06.216.

Later in the morning, Dartmouth competed in Heat 2 of the first varsity 8. The Big Green took fourth, narrowly missing out on third place and a spot in the grand final by .274 seconds. Dartmouth shot out to an early lead, carrying nearly a full boat length of a lead going into the final quarter of the race. Yale burst ahead near the end, and best the Big Green in the final moments. Dartmouth will race MIT in the petite final on Sunday.

In the Varsity 4, Dartmouth raced to a sixth place finish out of 11 crews with a time of 6:35.326, qualifying for the grand final, scheduled for Saturday morning.

The Varsity 4 will be the lone Dartmouth crew competing on Saturday, with the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 crews competing on Sunday. Live stream and live result links can be found on the team's schedule page on DartmouthSports.com, the official website of Dartmouth Athletics.
