AMHERST, Mass. — An early red card and goal against did not deter the Dartmouth men's soccer team in a mid-week contest against UMass. The Big Green put forth a spirited performance, finding an equalizer in the 87
th minute to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Douglas Arveskär scored a goal in his second consecutive game in the dying moments of the contest to pull Dartmouth even against UMass. The Big Green (1-2-1, 0-0-0 Ivy League) received assists from
Andrew Ellis and
Phineas Callahan on the late goal. Goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou was stellar in net, making seven saves to keep his side in the game. Dartmouth outshot UMass (3-1-2, 0-0-0 A10) 6-4 in the second half, despite playing with 10 men.
"To go down a man in the 19
th minute and to show the resilience of this group getting a goal with a few minutes to go in the game, it's just a special result," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "This group took a big step forward, even with this result. They believed, the bench was incredible and the guys on the field believed we could come back."
How it happened:
The opening moments of the contest were dictated by the Minutemen, as Dartmouth was pressured near its own goal. Christodoulou was up to the task early, making a pair of saves in the first 10 minutes of action.
Following another save from Christodoulou, a red card foul inside the box put Dartmouth on the back foot in the 19
th minute. Alex Hughes scored on the penalty opportunity, and the Big Green were forced to play with 10 men for the rest of the contest.
The rest of the first half featured chippy play from both sides, but a lack of offense. Christodoulou made his fourth stop of the day in the 33
rd minute and both teams combined for a red card, two yellow cards and 12 fouls in the first 45 minutes.
The half time break served Dartmouth well, as the Big Green returned for the second half with a burst of energy. Oshoniyi's squad challenged UMass' keeper Matt Zambetti for the first time in the 53
rd minute with a strong chance from
Kristian Feed. Moments later,
Vasilis Moiras fired the best opportunity of the afternoon for Dartmouth on net, but it was turned aside.
Despite being down a man, Dartmouth continued to pressure UMass for an equalizer. The Big Green held the majority of possession on the offensive side of the pitch through a 69
th minute hydration break.
Christodoulou came up large again for the Big Green, making a pair of stops in the 73
rd and 78
th minutes.
Dartmouth found a much-needed equalizer in the 87
th minute, as Arveskär headed in a ball from Ellis to tie the contest at one goal a side. The game closed with furious pace, but neither team could secure the game winner.
The draw moves the all-time series between the programs to 27-8-5 in favor of the Big Green.
