HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to three games following a 3-1 victory over Stonehill on Saturday night. The Big Green offense answered the bell after falling behind early in the second half, as a trio of unanswered goals pushed Dartmouth past the Skyhawks.
Dartmouth (2-2-1, 0-0-0 Ivy League) received goals from
Andrew Ellis,
Vasilis Moiras and
Sam Fenton, which propelled their team past Stonehill (1-3-2, 0-0-0 NEC). Goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou made five saves in the victory, while the Big Green outshot the Skyhawks 20-15.
"Hopefully, this was a learning lesson," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "We had a young group on the field and hopefully they learned a little bit. Credit to our guys for having a strong 15-minute period where we got three goals. I'm excited for the guys, but we have a lot of growing to do."
How it happened:
Dartmouth opened the game with a flurry of offensive chances, including shots on goal from Moiras and Ellis in the first six minutes of play. Stonehill's keeper Carlos Dias Neto was up to the challenge, turning both chances aside to keep the game scoreless.
The Skyhawks' first opportunity of the game in the ninth minute was turned away by a strong defensive effort, as a block thwarted Stonehill's first shot of the game.
The Big Green tested Dias Neto two more times in the first 45 minute of play, as shots from
Kristian Feed and
Ben Jenkins were stopped. The first yellow card of the game was issued to Stonehill in the 38
th minute.
Stonehill broke through in the 51
st minute, as a foul inside the 18-yard box gave the Skyhawks a penalty kick opportunity. Colin Milliken found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the early stages of the second half.
Dartmouth was undeterred by the deficit, as the offense began to apply pressure. Ellis put a shot through traffic toward the net, which was outside the reach of Dias Neto as the junior captain scored the equalizer in the 60
th minute.
The Big Green wasted no time in finding the go-ahead goal, as
James Wilson whippd a ball inside the box, which was headed into the net by Moiras just 34 seconds after Ellis' goal. Fenton gave the Big Green a two-goal lead in the 66
th minute, as he cashed in a rebound opportunity following a shot from Douglas Arveskar.
Arveskar appeared to extend Dartmouth's lead further in the 71
st minute, but the official called the play offside. The Big Green and Skyhawks combined for four yellow cards in the final 45 minutes of action.
Stonehill tested Dartmouth's defense toward the end of the match, as Christodoulou made a pair of saves in the final seven minutes of action. The Big Green maintained its two-goal advantage, improving to 2-0-0 against Stonehill in the all-time series.
