HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Merrimack at home on Tuesday night. The Big Green scored in the 27
th minute, but a pair of second half goals from the Warriors gave the visitors the victory at Burnham Field.
Freshman
Trenton Blake scored his first collegiate goal on Tuesday, giving his team a 1-0 lead in the opening half. His goal was assisted by
Kristian Feed and Sebastian Manon. In goal, sophomore
Costi Christodoulou made three saves for the Big Green.
How it happened:
Dartmouth challenged Merrimack's goalkeeper, Alvaro Rodriguez, for the first time in the 19
th minute, as Douglas Arveskar fired a shot, which was turned away. Feed put a shot on net less than a minute later following a corner kick, which was also turned aside.
A strong offensive effort from the Big Green led the home squad to its first goal of the evening. Manon connected with Feed, who sent a through ball past Merrimack's defense. Blake capitalized on the opportunity, putting a shot past Rodriguez to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 27
th minute.
The Big Green and Warriors battled evenly throughout the rest of the opening half. Christodoulou was challenged for the first time in the 37
th minute and stood up to the test, as Dartmouth took the one-goal lead into the second half.
Merrimack answered back in the opening moments of the second half, as Laurie Goddard found the back of the net to equalize the contest in the 48
th minute. The Warriors put the pressure on Christodoulou, who made a trio of saves in less than two minutes to keep the score tied.
Liam Ziegler broke the tie in the 67
th minute for the visitors, as Dartmouth found itself in a deficit for the first time in the match. Merrimack continued to send shots toward Christodoulou's net, but could not find the target,
Ben Jenkins put Dartmouth's final shot on net in the 84
th minute, which was turned way. The Big Green could not pull the game even, dropping the first-ever meeting between the programs by a score of 2-1.
