Lucia Campaño scored her first collegiate goal in the defeat

ITHACA, N.Y. — Dartmouth and Cornell were scoreless into the second quarter, but the Big Red broke out for four goals in less than 15 minutes of game action, bridging the first and second halves, on the way to downing the Big Green, 6-1 on Friday afternoon. Freshman Lucia Campaño scored her first-collegiate goal in the defeat. Dartmouth will look to bounce back on Sunday at Colgate.

With the loss, the Big Green fall to 2-3 and 0-2 in the Ivy League. Cornell improves to 4-2 and 2-0 in the Ivy.

"Ivy League field hockey is always a competitive environment," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "Today's game was no exception. There were a lot of positives. I think our effort and fight was clear throughout, but ultimately we allowed the competition to get the better of us too often. We need to play with more composure in our defensive 25 to minimize turnovers and corners against."

A scoreless first quarter saw six shots for the Big Red and one for Dartmouth, with sophomore goalkeeper Ava Carlson making two saves for the Big Green. Cornell went on to turn two of its three second-quarter shots into goals, scoring at the 19:38 and 28:25 marks to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Caroline Ramsey scored her first of three goals on the evening to kick off the scoring.

Ramsey went on to score two goals in 31 seconds early in the third quarter to double Cornell's lead to 4-0. Just as quickly, the Big Green got on the board, as Campaño netted her first-career goal at the 35:26 mark, just 1:05 after Ramey scored her third of the contest. Sophomore Olivia Galiotos picked up the assist on the play, coming off a corner.

That's as close as Dartmouth would come, however, as Cornell took a 5-1 lead with 52 seconds left in the third quarter, then 6-1 advantage midway through the fourth.

Final shots were 22-7 in favor of Cornell while the Big Red held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners. Carlson finished with seven saves, while Galiotos made an impressive defensive save in the third quarter. Cornell goalkeeper Martha Broderick made three saves.

"Congratulations to Olivia on a fantastic defensive stop, and to Lucia for getting us on the scoresheet," said Egner. "We're seeing good things from this group; we need to see that continue."

The Big Green will return to action on Sunday at Colgate. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
