THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
The Dartmouth field hockey team is set to travel to upstate New York this weekend for an Ivy League showdown at Cornell on Friday (4 p.m.) followed by a nonleague contest at Colgate on Sunday (12 p.m.). The Big Green enter the weekend 2-2, most recently falling at No. 15 Harvard last Friday by a 4-0 final. Both games this weekend can be seen on ESPN+.
WITH A WIN...
- (With a win Friday) Dartmouth would be 3-2 after five games for the first time since the 2011 season.
- (With a 2-0 weekend) Dartmouth would be 4-2 after six games for the first time since 2011.
- (With a 1-1 weekend) Dartmouth would be 3-3 after six games for a third straight season.
- The Big Green would improve to 23-20-1 all-time against Cornell. They would snap a nine-game losing streak against the Big Red and beat Cornell for the first time since Nov. 3, 2012 — a 2-1 win in Ithaca.
- Dartmouth would improve to 2-0-1 all-time against Colgate.
LAST TIME OUT...
- For three quarters, the Dartmouth field hockey team hung neck-and-neck with 15th ranked Harvard, but the Crimson scored twice in the span of 2:41 early in the fourth to double their lead, on the way to downing the Big Green, 4-0 on Friday.
- In what was the Ivy League opener for both sides, senior
Lila Browne had a shot on goal early in the second quarter that would have tied the score, but Harvard scored at the 25:52 mark to take a 2-0 halftime lead, a margin that would stand until early in the fourth.
ALL-TIME VS. CORNELL
Dartmouth leads the all-time series against Cornell, 22-20-1, but the Big Red have won nine straight games. The Big Green's last victory was at Cornell on Nov. 3, 2012, a 2-1 Dartmouth win. Last season, the Big Red beat Dartmouth, 3-1, also in Ithaca.
Meg Barnes scored with 45 seconds left to account for the Big Green's goal.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Cornell enters the weekend 3-2, having won two straight and three of the last four. The Big Red's wins this season have come over UConn, Columbia and American (2-1 in double overtime). Cornell swept this past week's Ivy League weekly awards, with Grace Leahy winning Offensive Player of the Week and goalkeeper Martha Broderick garnering Defensive Player of the Week. Caroline Ramsey won Offensive Player of the Week the week prior; she leads the Big Red in goals (6) and points (12), with five of those goals coming in the first three games of the season. Caroline's sister Julia, a freshman, leads the team in assists with six. Broderick has played every minute in goal, owning a 1.62 goals against average and 72.7 save percentage.
ALL-TIME VS. COLGATE
Dartmouth leads the all-time series with Colgate, 1-0-1. The last time the teams played was on Nov. 5, 1994 in the ECAC Tournament, a 4-0 Big Green victory. The only other meeting between the sides was a 1-1 tie on Oct. 7, 1989.
SCOUTING COLGATE
After a 3-15 season in 2022, the Raiders are 3-4 to begin this season. Colgate owns wins over Rider (2-1 in overtime), Lindenwood (2-1) and Saint Louis (3-2 in overtime). Most recently, the Raiders dropped a 2-1 final to American in their Patriot League opener. Ella Murphy leads Colgate in assists (4) and points (6). Alice Walton, Rachel Alderfer and Dani Palmer each own two goals to lead the team; Walton's five points are second on the Raiders. Alderfer has all three of Colgate's defensive saves. Claire van Kempen has played every minute in goal, tallying a 2.11 goals against average and 68.8 save percentage.
ODDS AND ENDS
- Dartmouth's 11 goals through the first three games marked its most since the 2011 season, when the Big Green scored 12 through the first three contests.
- The Big Green's 2.75 goals per game are good for 12th in the nation.
- Dartmouth is also fifth nationally in penalty corners per game (9.25) and 11th in points per game (8.00).
- The Big Green entered Ivy League play with a winning record (2-1) for the first time since 2010.
LAST SEASON
Despite finishing 0-7 in Ivy League play last season, there were a number of highlights. Dartmouth lost its last five league games by a single goal, including 1-0 and 3-2 defeats to nationally-ranked Princeton and Harvard, respectively. The other defeats were by just two goals. The margin in Ivy play of minus-9 was 12 goals better than the year prior — when the Big Green were outscored by 21.
