HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Dartmouth field hockey team found itself trailing 1-0 less than a minute into Sunday's game and 3-1 after one quarter of play, but the Big Green responded with four of the game's final five goals, capped off by freshman Lucia Campaño scoring her second goal in as many games to send Dartmouth home with a 5-4 win over Colgate. Junior
Emilia Callahan scored three of the Big Green's four goals in regulation, a career high for goals (3) and points (6), which were both the most for a Dartmouth player since 2015.
"I thought we started far too slowly," said Dartmouth head coach
Mark Egner. "I don't think we brought the right energy that we needed to today's game. As a consequence, Colgate caught us very quickly. We put ourselves into a hole that we needed to get ourselves out of. Testament to the team though; they really stepped up and fought back and in the second quarter, we worked really hard to get ourselves back into the game."
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 3-3 ahead of two home games next weekend (vs. Brown and Yale). Colgate falls to 3-5.
The Big Green were playing catch up for most of the game, but Callahan scored her third of the game just over five minutes into the fourth quarter to help force overtime. In the extra session, Campaño took a long pass from classmate
Ella Bowman, made a nifty move around a defender, then around the goalkeeper before sliding it easily into the open net to snap Dartmouth's two-game losing streak and give the Big Green their second straight overtime win (along with beating Merrimack two Sundays ago). Dartmouth now has two overtime wins in the same season for the first time since 2019.
"I was really looking forward to that goal," said Campaño. "We needed it. We had been really close the whole game."
Colgate came out strong, scoring just 51 seconds into the game following a penalty corner. It took the Big Green just over two minutes to pull even as senior
Lila Browne found Callahan at the far post, who buried the chance to make it 1-1 at the 3:07 mark.
The Raiders responded with goals at 4:35 and 8:59, scoring on their only three shots on goal in the first quarter.
Dartmouth came back with the next two goals, both coming in the first 5:03 of the second quarter. First,
Bronwyn Bird's initial shot was saved, but Browne directed the ball towards goal and Callahan finished it to pull the Big Green within 3-2. Not long after, Browne had a nifty deflection of a
Meg Barnes pass, redirecting it perfectly into the left corner of the goal to make the score 3-3. Browne finished the game with a goal and two assists.
Colgate scored the only goal of the third quarter, but Callahan came up with her third early in the fourth, again coming on a deflection. Barnes picked up her second assist of the game on the play, which pulled Dartmouth even at 4-4 just 5:35 into the fourth. In the process, Callahan became the first Big Green student-athlete with a hat trick since Rebecca Hu on Nov. 1, 2015 at Vermont. Callahan's six points were also the most since Hu's hat trick in that game.
The Big Green finished with a 6-2 edge in fourth quarter shots and 4-0 advantage in overtime, tallying the final eight shots of the contest, bridging the fourth quarter and overtime, where Campaño was the hero.
"In the second half, I thought we really established a good phase of possession, great opportunities," said Egner. "We really felt like we were knocking on the door right up until the end of regulation. Going into overtime, it's a tough thing to do, especially on the road. For our girls to pick up the win is really, really special. There's a lot to be said for the performances of Lucia and Emilia today in terms of producing outcomes for us in the circle."
Final shots were 23-11 in favor of Dartmouth while the Raiders held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore
Ava Carlson made two saves for the Big Green across Colgate's Claire van Kempen, who had eight.
Dartmouth returns home next weekend to host Brown on Saturday (12 p.m.) and New Hampshire on Sunday (1 p.m.). Both games can be seen live on ESPN+.
