Date: Saturday, Sept. 9 | 7 p.m.
Location: West Point, N.Y. | Anderson Rugby Complex
All-Time Series: Dartmouth leads 6-2
NIRA OPENER
After a 79-0 rout of Penn State, a member of the Collegiate Rugby Association of America, Dartmouth opens NIRA play on the road against Army West Point. The two perennial contenders met in the 2021 NIRA Championship with the Big Green earning a 28-18 win for their second title in program history. Dartmouth, of course, went on to make it back-to-back championships in 2022, and Army West Point came up short in the NIRA semifinal.
IMPRESSIVE DEBUT
Dartmouth, which hasn't lost a season opener in the history of program (dating back to 2015), dominated Penn State to the tune of a 79-0 thrashing.
Simone Bautista and
Asialeata Meni both scored three tries to lead a high-powered Dartmouth offense that featured seven different scorers.
FIRST LOOK AT THE FRESHMEN
Rookies
Cindy Taulava and
Paola Arredondo Almeida both scored twice, while fellow freshmen
Hehea Pulotu added another score. Impressive efforts from freshman is a welcomed sight for the Big Green, who bid farewell to five All-NIRA honorees after the 2022-23 season.
REGULAR SEASON DOMINANCE
Dartmouth has scored 259 points over its last three regular season matches. The 2022 squad capped the regular season with 95-point and 85-point performances against Princeton and Brown, respectively.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING
Anjali Pant starred in Dartmouth's 24-15 victory over Army West Point on Oct. 1, 2022, which was a rematch of the 2021 NIRA Final. She scored back-to-back tries in the first half, helping the Big Green to a 14-0 lead by the 30:00 mark. Tries from
Simone Bautista and
Kristin Bitter helped fend off a Black Knight comeback.
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
The Black Knights suffered a 31-7 road loss to Sacred Heart on Friday, Sept. 1. Asha Jarusinski scored Army West Point's lone try as the Pioneers avenged their 40-17 loss from a season ago, despite taking a yellow card and fielding only 14 players for a stretch. It was Army West Point's first season-opening loss since 2018.
SERIES HISTORY AT A GLANCE
Prior to the one meeting in 2022, Dartmouth won twice on Army West Point's home pitch in 2021, and they were the two closest matches the Big Green played all year. Those two wins more than avenged a 39-19 loss at Brophy Field in October 2019. 2018, of course, was much like 2021 - Dartmouth beat Army twice en route to a national championship. The two teams traded lopsided decisions between 2016 and 2017 to begin the all-time series.
LOOKING AHEAD
Dartmouth visits Princeton on Saturday, Sept. 16 to complete a three-game road stretch before hosting Quinnipiac on Saturday, Sept. 23 for the home opener. That's the first of a three-match homestand with Lindenwood (Saturday, Oct. 7) and Harvard (Saturday, Oct. 21) visiting later.
