HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth men's soccer opened its home schedule in front of nearly 1,000 supporters at Burnham Field. The Big Green did not disappoint the raucous crowd, blowing past the Holy Cross Crusaders by a score of 3-1 in non-conference action.
The Big Green (1-2-0, 0-0-0 Ivy League) scored three consecutive goals to put the contest out of reach. Holy Cross (1-3-1, 0-0-0 Patriot League) responded with a goal in the 60
th minute, but the Big Green held strong, winning their first home opener since 2019.
Dartmouth's goals came from
Oskar Magnusson,
Ben Jenkins and Douglas Arveskär, who scored the first goal of his collegiate career against the Crusaders. The Big Green dominated offensively, recording 10 shots on goal compared to Holy Cross' two.
"We had a long trip in California and to get our first win, get some goals and have a freshman score a goal; it was great," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "It's a step in the right direction. We have to still work on some things to get a little bit better in the final third and defensively. All-in-all, I'm really proud of the boys to bounce back and get a win like that".
How it happened:
Dartmouth's offense made its presence felt in the early stages of the contest.
Vasilis Moiras registered the game's first shot on goal in the fourth minute, which was followed by a pair of corner kicks in the first six minutes.
The Big Green capitalized on a mistake from the Crusaders to take a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of action. Magnusson took the ball off a bad Holy Cross touch, blasting a shot past goalkeeper Tristan Stephani to give his team the lead.
Oshoniyi's team did not let off the gas pedal as Dartmouth continued to send chances toward Holy Cross' net, which included shots on goal from
Tom Collins and
Cade Keesling. Dartmouth keeper
Costi Christodoulou made his first save of the day in the 33
rd minute.
The consistent pressure from the Big Green paid off yet again in the 34
th minute, as a pass from Collins just outside the 18-yard box set
Ben Jenkins up for an opportunity. The junior did not waste the chance, rifling a shot into the top-left corner of the net to give the Big Green a 2-0 lead.
Dartmouth picked up where it left off in the second half, extending its lead to three goals in the 56
th minute.
Trenton Blake sent a cross into the box, which bounced off Moiras and onto the foot of Arveskär. The freshman buried the chance to give Dartmouth a dominating advantage.
Holy Cross cut into Dartmouth's lead in the 60
th minute, as Evan Jones scored his first of the year for the Crusaders.
The Big Green continued to put offense together, looking to extend their lead further. The chippy nature of the contest between the regional foes escalated in the last 10 minutes of the game, as a pair of yellow cards were issued between the teams. Five total yellow cards were distributed by the officials throughout the night.
Dartmouth rolled to its fifth straight home win, dating back to last season. The Big Green also maintained its unbeaten record over the Crusaders in the all-time series improving to 7-0-4 against Holy Cross.
