HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team led Penn, a 2023 Ivy League Tournament participant, at halftime before succumbing to the Quakers down the stretch in a 53-39 loss on Saturday afternoon inside Leede Arena.
Â
The defeat moves the Big Green to 6-8 on the season and 0-2 in the Ivy League. Penn improved to 9-6 and 1-1 in the Ancient Eight.
Â
A strong start saw Dartmouth score 17 points and shoot better than 50 percent in the first quarter, eventually leading 26-24 at halftime, but the Big Green would muster just 13 points in the second half while the Quakers pulled away.
Â
Clare Meyer led Dartmouth with a season-high 14 points as the only Big Green player to score in double figures. The Quakers were paced by double-doubles from Stina Almqvist and Jordan Obi. Almqvist recorded game-highs in both scoring (15) and rebounding (13).
Doreen Ariik, who leads the Ivy League in blocks per game, rejected three Quaker shots to bolster the Big Green defense and help hold Penn more than 15 points below its season average.
Â
The Big Green had their largest lead, 26-20, at the 3:38 mark of the second quarter after a
Victoria Page jumper, but Penn needed just the remaining minutes of the first half and the opening seconds of the third quarter to claim a 27-26 advantage. Marianna Papazoglou's 3-pointer gave the Quakers their first lead since the opening quarter before the Big Green responded with a bucket from
Cate MacDonald. Obi scored at the 5:50 mark of the third to start an 11-1 run that gave the Penn the first double-digit lead of the game for either side.
Â
Dartmouth was unable to come within 10 points during a cold-shooting fourth quarter. Meyer and MacDonald accounted for only Big Green field goals in the final 10 minutes.
Â
Dartmouth took care of the ball to the tune of just seven turnovers, which marks the lowest total for the Big Green since the 2019-20 season.
Â
The five-game homestand wraps up on Monday at 6 p.m. when Dartmouth hosts defending Ivy League champion Princeton. Fans are invited to stick around after the game as the team will be signing autographs in the lobby of Berry Sports Center.
