HANOVER, N.H. — Like last weekend at Yale, the Dartmouth women's basketball team was within reach of its first Ivy League win in a low-scoring affair that came down to the final seconds. This Saturday at Brown, the Big Green couldn't capitalize in the waning minutes and dropped a 35-31 decision despite a stellar defensive effort.
Â
Dartmouth dropped to 6-11 (0-5 Ivy) and Brown improved to 13-5 (4-1 Ivy).
Â
First-year
Cate MacDonald was the game's only scorer to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points to complement her 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Doreen Ariik also recorded double-digit boards, finishing with 10, as the Big Green claimed two double-figure rebounders for a second time this season (MacDonald and
Nina Minicozzi against Siena being the previous pair).
Â
Grace Arnolie grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Bears, who totaled 57, including 19 on the offensive glass. Ada Anamekwe led Brown in the scoring column with nine. Both sides combined to shoot 4-of-44 from deep as
Mia Curtis and Isabella Mauricio accounted for the game's only 3-pointers. Brown shot a season-worst 19.7 percent from the field while being held to a season-low in points against a Big Green defense that leads the Ivy League statistically (52.6 points allowed per game).
Â
Brown had a 13-point advantage at two different points in the third quarter, stretching the lead over the Big Green, who were held to nine points in the first half. Dartmouth consistently chipped away until coming within one possession, 32-29, at the 5:00 mark of the fourth. A
Mekkena Boyd jumper made it a two-point game with just over a minute remaining and Dartmouth would soon have the ball back with the shot clock off and a chance to win or force overtime, only for a traveling violation to send the ball back to Bears. Arnolie knocked down two big free throws to let Brown escape with the four-point win.
Â
Dartmouth's road stretch continues on Friday, Feb. 2 with a visit to Cornell, starting a back-to-back weekend that will send the Big Green to Columbia on Saturday. Both games, along with all Ivy League games, will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on DartmouthSports.com.
