HANOVER, N.H. — With the season set to begin next month, Dartmouth head men's lacrosse coach
Sean Kirwan announced the Big Green captains on Friday, which includes fifth years
Andrew Johnston and
Mitchell Myers, and senior
Nate Davis. The captains were chosen by their peers.
Johnston was named a co-captain for a second straight season. The former honorable mention All-Ivy honoree as a junior enjoyed a strong senior season as well, posting 17 groundballs and eight caused turnovers at close defense. He appeared in all 12 games, starting 11, helping the Big Green to a 6-6 overall record, which marked their most wins and best record since 2008. Johnston recorded a career-high four caused turnovers at Hampton, which wrapped up a 5-1 nonconference record for the Big Green, as they received votes in the national polls for multiple weeks.
A fellow fifth year, Myers has been named All-Ivy in each of the last two seasons as a standout faceoff specialist. He finished 2023 second in the Ivy League in faceoff percentage (56.1), which was also a career high (after winning 55.4 percent in 2022 when he was named first team All-Ivy). Myers also collected a career-high 83 groundballs, as his 6.92 groundballs per game were second in the Ivy League. One of Myers' strongest games came at No. 13 North Carolina when he won 24-of-34 faceoffs with 11 groundballs. That marked the fourth time in the first five games of the season he reached double figures in groundballs. Myers was 21-of-39 with 13 groundballs at Hobart going against Adam Shea, who owned more than 500 career faceoff wins with a winning percentage over 55 percent. In Ivy League play, Myers was also 17-of-26 at No. 15 Penn with seven groundballs.
Last season, Davis earned All-Ivy for the first time in his career and now entering 2024, has been named a captain for the first time. Davis broke out last season with 29 points from the midfield, finishing third on the Big Green. Helping facilitate the Dartmouth offense, Davis' 20 goals were also third on the team while his nine assists were tied for second. Davis recorded multiple points in 10 of the 12 games in 2023, including all but one Ivy League contest. Davis had two hat tricks — at Hobart and vs. No. 20 Princeton — while scoring two goals and dishing an assist in Dartmouth's Ivy League opening win over Harvard. One of the goals came with 5:06 remaining to even the score at nine and force overtime, where the Big Green were victorious.
Dartmouth opens its season, and the Kirwan era, on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Bucknell at 12 p.m. The Big Green return a large core of last year's team, including their top five scorers and each of their four postseason Ivy League honorees in 2023 in Myers, Davis, sophomore
Emmett Paradine and senior
Peter Lapina. Paradine was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year while Lapina garnered Academic All-Ivy honors.
