NEW YORK, N.Y. – After earning a tie against the Crimson on Wednesday, the Big Green traveled to Columbia searching for their first conference win of the season.
After seeing two Columbia goals called back and earning multiple chances of their own, a penalty in the final few minutes granted the Lions a penalty kick that they ultimately converted on, dealing the Big Green a 1-0 victory.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 6-5-2 and 0-3-1 in Ivy League play.
In the first few minutes of the game, Columbia seemed to have gotten on the board, but an offsides call overturned the goal, keeping the game tied at zero.
Both teams played an even first half and exchanged chances, but the first 45 minutes ended in a 0-0 tie.
In the second half, the Lions thought they got on the board again, however a collision with Big Green keeper
Emily Hardy disallowed the goal, once again reverting the score to 0-0.
Hailey Rorick had one of the Big Green's best chances of the day with a shot from right outside the box, but it arched right into the Lions' goalkeepers' hands, keeping the game scoreless.
Rorick had two shots against the Lions, both of which found their way to the keeper.
With just under three minutes left in the game, a Dartmouth handball in the box granted Columbia a penalty kick. Sophia Cavaliere converted the PK, scoring her second goal of the season, both of which came from the penalty spot to give the Lions the 1-0 lead late in the game.
Dartmouth continued to push but the Lions defense held strong for the final few minutes, walking away with the 1-0 win.
Hardy made her third consecutive start in net for the Big Green, stopping four of the five Lions shots on goal.
The Big Green will return to action Saturday, hosting Penn for their Pink Game and kicking off the Dartmouth soccer doubleheader on Burnham Field. Kickoff against the Quakers is set for 3 p.m.
