Dartmouth wouldn't trail for the game's final 24:47
By: Justin Lafleur
EASTON, Pa. — Trailing by two after one quarter, the Dartmouth women's basketball team outscored Lafayette by 15 over the final three quarters, on the way to defeating the Leopards 60-47 on Wednesday evening at the Kirby Sports Center. Clare Meyer was stellar in posting 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her third-career double-double.
Victoria Page led the way offensively with 15 points, and Alexandra Eldredge scored 10 points as well. Zeynep Ozel had nine points and an assist, with just one turnover, as she's turned the ball over just once over the last two games (62 minutes of action).
The win gives Dartmouth back-to-back road victories for the first time since February of 2019. It also avenges the Big Green's slim two-point loss to Lafayette at home last season. Dartmouth improves to 3-2 on the road this season, its best record after five road games since also standing 3-2 to begin 2017-18 away from home.
A Page 3-point play evened the score at 24 with 6:49 on the clock, beginning a 12-2 Big Green rally. The run also included field goals from Olivia Austin, Tahira Muhammad and Meyer, ending with a Page driving layup to give Dartmouth a 33-26 lead with 3:04 left in the first half.
That proved to be the final scoring until Lafayette's Tasha Chuddy connected on a jumper as the time expired, pulling the Leopards within 33-28 after 20 minutes of play.
Victoria Page finishes off the TOUGH 3-point play and we are tied!
A few minutes into the third, Dartmouth extended its lead to double figures for the first time as an Ozel 3-pointer gave the Big Green a 40-30 lead.
Not long after, Austin converted a second-chance opportunity to make the margin 12.
Lafayette pulled as close as seven twice more in the third, but Dartmouth took a comfortable 49-39 lead into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER:
After almost three scoreless minutes from both sides to begin the quarter, the Big Green connected on five straight points to open a 54-39 lead with 6:50 remaining.
The Leopards twice surged to within 11, but never closer.
Page hit a pullup jumper with 2:03 remaining to give the Big Green a 13-point lead, then hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to account for the 60-47 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Dartmouth shot 51.9% from the floor (14-of-27) in the first half, finishing the game at 43.6% (24-of-55). It marked the Big Green's second straight half shooting above 50% from the floor (they were at 55.6% in the second half at CCSU Monday).
Dartmouth finished Wednesday at 26.3% from 3-point range (5-of-19).
Lafayette shot 36.2% from the field (21-of-58) and 26.7% from behind the arc (4-of-15).
Austin's five assists led the team and marked a career high.
The Big Green held a 41-29 edge in rebounds, marking their largest rebounding edge of the season (+12) and largest against a Division I opponent since a 13-rebound edge on Jan. 7, 2023 against Brown.
Meyer's double-double was her first of the season, third of her career and third by a Big Green player this season (along with Austin vs. UMass Lowell and Ozel last time out at CCSU).
Dartmouth's back-to-back road wins marks the first time it's happened since Feb. 8-9 of 2019 when they beat Cornell and Columbia.
Page has solely led the Big Green in scoring (or tied for the team lead) in eight of the first 11 games of the season.
The Big Green finish the season 2-1 against the Patriot League, also beating Navy while falling to Bucknell by just two.
QUOTABLE:
Hear from Page, Coach Cimino and Meyer following the victory.
