ATHENS, Ga. — Opening the 2024 season and competing in the Georgia Classic, hosted by No. 3 Georgia, the Dartmouth softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Radford on Friday afternoon despite multi-hit performances from
Olivia Schramm and
Kelly Beaupre.
Â
First-year Schramm, making her collegiate debut, was 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and Beaupre went 2-for-3.
Alaana Panu's fourth-inning double, followed by a Beaupre single and Schramm's sacrifice fly gave the Big Green their lone run. Another first-year,
Justice Malone, recorded a hit in her debut.
Â
Radford was powered by a 3-for-4 performance from leadoff hitter Lexie Roberts, along with Amber Wolfe's RBI double that gave the Highlanders a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Malorie Reeves earned the win in the circle, having pitched four innings with five hits allowed. Abby Peace was credited the save, striking out three over three innings of work with two hits surrendered.
Â
Rachel McCarroll, who pitched four and a third, took the loss with three earned runs and seven hits allowed. First-year
Jensin Hall made her debut in the circle and pitched the remainder of the contest, picking up a pair of strikeouts in an inning and two thirds.
Â
Radford opened the scoring in the third inning after Abby Wilson's sacrifice fly, which followed singles by Abby Bossler and Lexie Roberts. Dartmouth responded to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but the Highlanders' leadoff single in the next half inning spelled trouble for the Big Green, who trailed once again after Wolfe's double.
Â
After a Radford's two insurance runs in the fifth, the Big Green had the tying run at the plate in the seventh as Beaupre and Schramm led the inning with back-to-back singles. Both were left stranded as Peace retired the next three batters.
Â
The Georgia Classic continues on Saturday with the Big Green set to face Radford once again (10 a.m.) before a battle with No. 21 Virginia Tech at 5:30 p.m. Live stats for both games will be available on DartmouthSports.com.
