ATHENS, Ga. — The Dartmouth softball team came up short of its first win on Saturday, dropping a nailbiter to Radford, before being shutout by No. 21 Virginia Tech in the nightcap. Seniors
Kelly Beaupre and
Mary Beth Cahalan were stellar at the plate to start the day, and first-year
Jensin Hall turned heads against a hot Hokies lineup with four shutout innings.
Â
Sophomore
Allie Ohde hit her first career home run against Radford.
GAME 1: Radford 6, Dartmouth 5
Despite grabbing a 2-0 lead, thanks in part to Ohde's blast, the Big Green were upended by Radford's six-run seventh in Saturday's opener. Even after trailing 6-3 and down to their final three outs, the Big Green still had life, plating three in the bottom of the seventh and coming up just shy of forcing extras with the tying run left on second base.
Â
Seniors led the way for Dartmouth offensively as Cahalan and Beaupre both went 3-for-4, including a double from Cahalan. Hall started in the circle and pitched six shutout innings with eight strikeouts to her credit before suffering a rocky seventh. Reliever Morgan Cooper got the win for the Highlanders, having gone three and a third with three earned runs allowed. Two-RBI efforts from Abby Wilson and Amanda Lee powered Radford, who was outhit 12-7 by the Big Green.
Â
Ohde's second-inning solo shot had Dartmouth on top early, and
Leila Hennessy added to the lead with an RBI single in the fourth. Facing a 6-2 deficit in the seventh, first-year
Cwen Wilson led the inning with a double and was brought home by
Alaana Panu's sacrifice fly.
Ashley Frantz, who was hit by a pitch, then scored on Beaupre's third hit of the game.
Olivia Schramm's RBI single put additional pressure on the Highlanders, scoring Cahalan and making it a one-run game. That's when Abby Peace, who entered the circle midway through the seventh and allowed back-to-back hits, was able to settle in to retire the final two batters, leaving runners stranded on first and second.

GAME 2: No. 21 Virginia Tech 6, Dartmouth
Hall highlighted the nightcap against No. 21 Virginia Tech with her four shutout innings in the circle. Entering in relief of McCarroll, the first-year struck out seven and allowed only one hit to the Hokies, who just a day ago defeated No. 3 Georgia, and rank fourth in the nation in slugging percentage.
Â
Dartmouth was only able to muster two hits, both of which came from Frantz, against the pitching of Emma Lemley and Cassie Grizzard.
Â
Virginia Tech's nine hits came from eight different batters, including Emma Ritter and Cori McMillan, who both hit two-run home runs. McMillan's shot came in the first and Ritter followed in the third. The fourth inning featured two more Hokie runs, thanks in part to Michelle Chatfield's RBI double.

The Georgia Classic closes on Sunday as the Big Green battle the host, No. 3 Georgia at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+ and live stats will be available through DartmouthSports.com.
