HANOVER, N.H. — Putting its 5-0 start to the test and capping off an action-packed weekend in Boss Tennis Center, the Dartmouth men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to defending Big East champion St. John's on Saturday afternoon.
The doubles point proved to be crucial in a showdown where both sides claimed three singles matches.
Miles Groom and
Waleed Qadir remained unbeaten and represented Dartmouth's lone doubles victory, but it wasn't enough to fend off the Red Storm, who were victorious on the top two courts.
Henry Ren (No. 2),
Miles Groom (No. 4) and
Yujiro Onuma (No. 5) accounted for the Big Green's three singles triumphs. Onuma improved to a team-best 5-0 in singles.
Carlos Guerrero Alvarez nearly gave Dartmouth the match at the No. 1 position, but was edged in a third-set tiebreak by Francisco Bascon.
The Big Green take next weekend off before competing in the ECAC Championship at Harvard beginning on Friday, Feb. 16.
