HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team scored three goals in the second period en route to a 3-1 victory over Union on Friday evening in game one of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.
Braiden Dorfman,
Matt Fusco and
Joey Musa each lit the lamp while
Cam MacDonald had a multi-point night with two assists.
Dartmouth improves to 12-9-9 while Union drops to 16-17-3.
Speaking about scoring three goals in the second period, Koenig Family Head Coach
Reid Cashman said, "We found a way to possess in the o-zone and we were able to get some line changes in the offensive zone. We did a good job of delivering pucks and have multiple options around there. Our guys really stuck with it, found a way to score three and set ourselves up for the third period."
Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Big Green scored two goals inside the first seven minutes of the middle frame to take a 2-1 lead. Dorfman tied the game just 33 seconds into the second period after redirecting an
Eric Charpentier shot from the blue line.
Matt Fusco put Dartmouth in the lead five minutes later during a 4v4 sequence. Fusco forced a turnover in the Big Green defensive zone and played a give-and-go with
Cam MacDonald in a 2-on-0 situation and had the tap in at the back post for his second goal of the season.
Dartmouth tallied a third goal in the second period, this one coming from
Joey Musa with 17 seconds on the clock. A saved shot near the front of goal was passed by MacDonald to an open Musa at the back post for the quick shot, giving Musa his sixth goal of the year.
The Big Green nearly jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first when Union was called for a penalty, also giving Dartmouth a penalty shot.
CJ Foley's ensuing shot was saved by Garnet Charger goaltender Kyle Chauvette to keep it scoreless.
Union took the lead minutes later when Nick Young got his stick on the puck after a pass towards goal from Caden Villegas near the right side, giving the Garnet Chargers a 1-0 lead with seven and a half minutes left in the first.
The Big Green held its two-goal lead through the remainder of the contest, blocking 11 shots during the third period.
Cooper Black made 23 saves in the game to earn his 12
th win of the season.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow night for game two against Union in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
