HAMILTON, N.Y.—No. 10 Dartmouth men's hockey fell 5-2 to Colgate on Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y.
The first period saw the Big Green outshoot the Raiders 14-4 but the Raiders held a 2-0 lead after scoring at the 12:17 and 17:42 marks.
4:38 into the second period, the Big Green cut the Colgate lead in half. While on the fore check Andrew Clarke cut off a Colgate pass behind the net, CJ Foley picked up the loose puck and drove to the front of the net. The puck was tied up as Alex Krause got a touch on the puck. Ryan Schelling found the loose puck in front and his shot trickled over the line for his fifth goal of the year. Krause picked up his fourth assist while it was Foley's 11th.
The Raiders responded with a power play goal at the 7:13 mark of the frame and an even strength goal at the 17:16 mark to take a 4-1 lead to the third period.
After 40 minutes of play the Big Green were outshooting Colgate 23-9.
7:50 into the third period, Colgate scored its fifth goal of the game.
With just under five minutes left in the third period, the Big Green found the back of the net. With the goalie pulled the Big Green had the puck controlled in the Raider zone. Eric Charpentier, Cooper Cleaves, and Nikita Nikora played catch with the puck at the top of the zone. C. Cleaves fired a shot through traffic that found its way to the back of the net. C. Cleaves notched his third goal of the year while Nikora picked up his 11th assist and Charpentier picked up his eighth.
Dartmouth tallied 20 shots in the third period while limiting Colgate to just five.
Roan Clarke made nine saves while the Big Green blocked 11 shots in front of him. Nikora blocked a team high three shots while eight members of the Big Green blocked a shot.
The Big Green set a new season high in shots with 43, they limited Colgate to a season low 14 shots.
Dartmouth edged out Colgate 26-24 in the faceoff circle, Hank Cleaves won a team best 11 draws while A. Clarke won 71.4% of his faceoffs.
The Big Green are back at Thompson Arena on Friday, Jan. 30 against Union, faceoff is set for 7 PM. On Saturday, Jan. 31 the Big Green host RPI for a 7 PM puck drop.
