HANOVER, N.H. – Saturday night was a night to remember at Thompson Arena as the Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Yale, 4-1, in ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action. With the win, the Big Green clinched the four seed in the ECAC Hockey conference tournament, earning an opening-round bye for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
Sean Chisholm and
CJ Foley both finished with one goal and one assist while
John Fusco also had two points after registering two assists.
Cooper Black made 19 saves to earn his fourth-straight win.
Dartmouth ends the regular season with a 11-9-9 overall and a 9-6-7 record in ECAC Hockey. Yale finishes with a 10-17-2, 7-13-2.
"We competed for 60 minutes," said Koenig Family Head Coach
Reid Cashman. "I thought our special teams did well. The power play scored a big goal and the penalty kill made some kills when we needed them to."
Yale opened the scoring late in the first period when Ian Carpentier put his shot from the point into the back of the net.
Dartmouth immediately responded minutes later when Foley scored on the power play. Foley and Fusco passed the puck back and forth between each other. Fusco made one more pass to Foley, who hit the first time shot through traffic and past Yale goaltender Jack Stark.
Eric Charpentier put the Big Green in the lead midway through the second period.
John Fusco's shot was blocked near the goal and the rebound went out to the left faceoff circle. Charpentier had the space and fired the puck into an open slot at the goal for his fourth goal of the season.
Cooper Flinton continued his scoring, tallying his 15
th goal of the year midway through the third.
Luke Haymes had a shot blocked from close range, but Flinton followed up on the loose puck and smashed it into the net.
Chisholm closed out the game with an empty net goal with under 30 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.
The Big Green blocked 13 shots, led by Foley's three. Dartmouth went 28-23 in the faceoff circle, with Haymes winning 12 of his 21 faceoffs.
"We talked about it before the game that tonight really became a playoff game," said Cashman. "We knew that if we won that we would advance to the second round and I'm so proud of our guys for doing that and now we'll know that we'll host."
