The Big Green’s 3V was victorious in the fours over Penn and Cal

LEONIA, N.J. — The Dartmouth men's lightweight rowing team opened its spring season on Saturday at the National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational against a pair of Ivy League opponents. The Big Green were extremely competitive all day, and captured a win in the fours as their third varsity defeated Penn and Cal.

In the fours, the Big Green posted a time of 7:07.736, nearly six seconds ahead of a Penn's 4V "B" boat in second (7:13.288). Cal was next (7:29.543) followed by the Quakers' 4V "A" boat (7:58.119). Dartmouth was also victorious in a final race against Cal in the afternoon, posting a time of 7:15.890 compared to the Bears' time of 7:25.560.

"It was a privilege to kick off our spring racing season at the National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational," said head coach Trevor Michelson. "I'm thrilled for our four's victory in both the morning and afternoon, and encouraged by our second eight's gritty racing against both Penn and Princeton. We have six first-years in that boat, and it was a promising start to their sprints league careers. I was disappointed with our varsity's performance, but am confident it was not representative of who they are as a crew."

Dartmouth narrowly lost against Penn in the varsity eight, finishing in 6:08.812, compared to the Quakers' 6:02.174. The Big Green's 2V was less than three seconds behind the pace, recording a time of 6:16.605 to Penn's 6:13.618.

In the afternoon, Dartmouth's 2V was less than five seconds behind Princeton (6:18.203 to 6:13.774). The Big Green's varsity eight finished in 6:19.428, trailing the Tigers in first (6:05.748).

Dartmouth returns to action for the Biglin Bowl on Saturday, Apr. 13 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"Excited to get back on our river on Monday and continue to find speed," said Michelson.
