HANOVER, N.H. – The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) announced finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award Tuesday, an honor that is given each year to the CCM/AHCA Division I men's ice hockey coach of the year. Among the finalists, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey and the ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year,
Reid Cashman.
Â
The finalists include coaches that were named their respective conference's coach of the year or have led their team to the Frozen Four of this year's NCAA Tournament. The award is named in memory of Spencer Penrose, the Colorado Springs benefactor that built the Broadmoor Hotel Complex, the home of the first ten NCAA championship tournaments.
Â
Cashman, who completed his third season as Dartmouth's head coach, led the team to a 13-10-9 record, their best record during his tenure, and a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey playoffs. This was the first time the Big Green had an opening round bye since 2010-11. Following two wins over Union, the Big Green advanced to Lake Placid for championship weekend for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Â
In addition to leading his team to success on the ice, many of his student-athletes received conference recognition.
CJ Foley was named both the ECAC Hockey and Ivy League Rookie of the Year,
Luke Haymes and
Cooper Black were each named to All-ECAC teams, and
Steven Townley was named to the Academic All-Ivy team. Foley and Haymes were also unanimous selections for the All-Ivy First team. In addition, Black just signed a National Hockey League entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers.
Â
The last time a Dartmouth coach won the Spencer Penrose Award was in 1967 when Edward Jeremiah took home the honor. He also won the award in 1951. Jeremiah is the longest tenured coach in Dartmouth history, having coached the Big Green for 26 seasons and posting a career 308-247-12 record.

Â
The winner of this year's Spencer Penrose award, selected by the 64 NCAA Division I head coaches, will be announced next Wednesday, April 10. The award will be presented to the recipient on May 1 at the 2024 AHCA Convention in Naples, Florida.
