HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green and Crusaders battled in their midweek matchup, with Dartmouth nipping on Holy Cross's heels for most of the game, but the Crusaders held on for the 6-5 victory.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 11-20 on the season.
Dartmouth scored the first run of the game when
Nathan Cmeyla ripped his fifth home run of the year on the first pitch he saw to put the Big Green up 1-0.
They remained in the lead until the fifth inning when the Crusaders loaded the bases with no outs, scoring one run on a hit by pitch, a double play, and a passed ball to take 3-1 lead over the Big Green.
Cmeyla pulled the Big Green within one run in their half of the fifth inning when he collected his second RBI of the day on a single to score
Tyler Robinson who led off the inning with a triple.
Holy Cross wasted no time putting up more insurance runs, plating two more runs in the sixth inning on a single down the first base line, making the score 5-2 and extending their lead to three.
The Big Green continued to fight back, loading the bases in the seventh inning, and once again pulling within one run. Dartmouth loaded the bases and two free passes, a hit by pitch and walk, made the score 5-4 in favor of the Crusaders.
In the eighth inning, the Crusaders added another run, the game winning run on a sacrifice bunt. Dartmouth responded in their half of the inning when
Kolton Freeman blasted a home run to left field, but both teams remained scoreless in the ninth, giving Holy Cross the 6-5 victory.
Clark Gilmore started on the mound for the Big Green and despite taking the loss, pitched well through four innings. Gilmore only allowed one hit that came in the fifth inning, walked five and struck out five.
Tyler Cortland was the first relief pitcher out of the bullpen, throwing 0.2 innings and giving up one run and fanning two.
Drew Koenen wrapped up the inning, getting one out but allowing two runs on one hit and two walks.
Nate Isler allowed one run on four hits in his three innings of relief, giving two free passes and striking out five.
Danny Will wrapped up the game allowing one hit and one walk while fanning two in his one inning of relief.
The Big Green will play their last home Ivy League series this weekend, welcoming Princeton for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. The Tigers and Big Green will face off at 11:30 a.m. for game one on Saturday and honor their seniors prior to the start of game two. First pitch for the single game on Sunday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
