LAS VEGAS — The Dartmouth women's golf team finished a historic season on Wednesday at the NCAA Regional in Las Vegas, standing in 11th place, one better than its seed coming in and ahead of five-time defending BIG EAST Champion Xavier. Sophomore Sophie Thai was either tied for or individually owned the Big Green's top scorer for a third straight day, shooting 4-over-76 on Wednesday.
Thai finished in a tie for 32nd overall, shooting 9-over-225. As a team, Dartmouth shot 27-over-309 on Wednesday to finish at 62-over-926, six strokes ahead of the Musketeers in 12th.
"I'm proud of the team," said Alex Kirk, Carolyn A. Palzel '54 Head Coach of Women's Golf. "Today was a tough day to play, probably 30-40 mile per hour winds. We fought hard. At the end of the day, I'm proud we're here, proud we qualified and we won our first championship. We got to experience what a regional is like.
"It's all positive," Kirk continued. "It's a celebration."
Senior Katherine Sung finished her historic career by shooting 6-over-78, finishing the three days at 13-over-229, which was tied for 43rd overall. First-year Caroline Chung shot 9-over-81 on Wednesday to finish 18-over-234. Sophomore Kim Shen posted her best score of the week, 8-over-80, to finish at 26-over-242. Senior Penelope Tir came in at 13-over-85, finishing 29-over-245.
"They're a special class," said Kirk, when asked about the seniors. "Katherine and Penelope, they're the foundation. Katherine is probably one of the best to ever play for DWG. Penny really came through in the clutch in Ivies and this whole year. It's a special group."
The 2023-24 season was highlighted by the Big Green winning their first-ever Ivy League Championship in late April, shooting 35-over-899, which was two strokes better than Yale.
"Glad it happened and glad to be part of [the seniors'] journey," said Kirk. "We'll try to keep building off of what we've established, and try and look forward to winning Ivies again and getting back to regionals, but they're a special group."
