Big Green Wrap Up Strong First Week of Preseason Camp

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth football team wrapped up week one of preseason camp on Saturday, a week that featured plenty of progress. The Big Green have been focused on getting the newcomers acclimated, building habits and building a strong foundation for the year ahead.
A number of themes have come to the forefront. One is toughness.
"We're going to be tough," said quarterback Jackson Proctor. "We've been banged up a little bit, but we've had some young guys come in and do a really good job. Toughness has been a word that we've talked about for a couple years now. We're always tough; we're always going to be tough.
"You can say that for the quarterback room as well," Proctor continued. "I'm the lone senior, there are no juniors and we've got a lot of young guys. They've been tough — mentally, physically, on the field and off the field. As long as we keep that going through this camp and into the season, we'll be good."
Competition has been another theme through the first week of practice.
"These guys are doing a great job of competing and trying to be consistent," said assistant coach Braxton Chapman, when asking about his position group (running backs). "I keep preaching to these guys trying to have a 1-0 mentality. Every day is a new day. You're only as good as the last thing you did. The things that we did last practice don't matter. We have to come out every day and try to have a really good day."
The offensive line is focused on firstly being assignment perfect, something that is true throughout the team.
"If we have unblocked people who should be blocked, it's hard to run the ball or throw the ball," said offensive line coach Keith Clark. "As we progress into preseason camp, then it becomes getting better at doing what we do."
Throughout the roster, the Big Green are progressing quickly… and well.
"The guys are doing a really good job of understanding what we want to get done big picture wise, moving around, putting themselves in different places and being able to get the job done the way Coach Dobes (defensive coordinator) needs it to get done," said secondary coach Aashon Larkins. "Guys are running around and playing fast."
Dartmouth's special teams was a strength last season, which should only continue with so many key members returning, including kicker Owen Zalc. Zalc was a preseason Stats Perform Third Team All-American following a record-breaking rookie season.
"I'll do exactly what I know I can do," he said. "The offense will put me in a great situation; I know we're going to have great success there."
The Big Green continue a busy preseason, with the next week including the team's first scrimmage of camp on Tuesday morning.
