HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green women's soccer team welcomed Yale to Burnham Field Saturday, looking to open conference play on a high. Despite coming from a goal down to tie the game, Dartmouth let up one late, ultimately falling to the Bulldogs, 2-1.
With the loss, the Big Green move to 6-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Ivy League.
Dartmouth and Yale remained scoreless for most of the first half, playing a pretty level game and trading chances.
The Bulldogs broke the tie first, finding the back of the net in the 38
th minute to put them up 1-0, ultimately taking the lead into halftime.
The Big Green generated their fair share of chances through the second half, but it wasn't until fifth year
Daisy Granholm headed a ball from a
Hannah Curtin pass, that Dartmouth got on the board, tying the game at one a piece.
Granholm continued the generate chances, smacking one off the cross bar and capitalizing on Bulldogs' turnovers.
Frankie Valverde intercepted two passes from Yale's keeper and found Granholm, but the ball would not cross the goal line, keeping the game tied at one.
In the 85
th minute though, a Yale shot from outside the box, snuck past Dartmouth keeper
Ally Connors, putting the Bulldogs up 2-1 and earning them their first Ivy League victory of the season.
Despite the loss, Stacy Branca '94 Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Taylor Schram said this was her team's "best performance of the year."
"I saw a ton of fight, saw a ton of quality. I think we were organized defensively, and we created a ton of chances. We created enough chances to create a different outcome but unfortunately, that's the cruelty of the game sometimes, it doesn't always go your way," Schram said.
Schram also gave credit to Granholm, the team's lone goal scorer. Not only did she earn her first tally in five games, but Schram said "I think her hold up play was good, she was engaged defensively. Her running in behind was quality tonight. She was a big player for us tonight."
The women's soccer program will now travel to Cornell to face the Big Red, and Schram says her team will approach it the same way they prepared for the Bulldogs.
"Knowing we are now going to be on the road against a quality opponent and if we focus on us and continue to get better each day, we know we are going to put a performance like we did tonight in then we know we can get the result we are looking for."
Kickoff between the Big Red and Big Green is set for next Saturday at 1 p.m.
