PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Dartmouth volleyball team fell in straight sets on Saturday night to the Brown Bears.
Set One (L, 25-16)
The match opened with Dartmouth and Brown trading points and ties as Brown held a slight 5-4 lead. Despite the early battle, the Bears took a 10-5 leading to a Dartmouth timeout. Brown wasn't fazed by the timeout as the lead grew to 20-12 which led to a second Dartmouth timeout. Dartmouth took four more points in the set, but Brown took the opening set 25-16.
Maddie LaFata had three kills for the Big Green while Kauany Gutz had two and Molly Power notched a kill. Both Ellie Mattox and Sophia Gagnepain had two assists while Julia Gojcaj and EllaMae Fitzgerald each had an assist. The duo of Power and LaFata combined for the lone Dartmouth block in the set. Eight different players had a dig for Dartmouth with Zori Brown and Gutz each having a team high four in the first set.
Set Two (L, 25-13)
Brown took the first two points of the second set and did not look back as they took an early 8-1 lead which led to a Dartmouth timeout. The Bears continued to build its lead until Dartmouth took a timeout with the score being 23-13. Brown took the next two points and took a 2-0 set lead.
Ava Roberts had a team high three kills in the second set while both LaFata and Gutz had two kills, Elle McCreery added a kill in the set. Mattox had a team high four assists while Gagnepain had two assists. Gagnepain notched four digs to lead Dartmouth while Gutz had three digs, eight members of the Big Green combined for 15 digs in the set. Gutz notched a service ace for the Big Green.
Set Three (L, 25-11)
Brown took 12 of the first 15 points of the set which forced a Dartmouth timeout. The Bears extended the lead to 21-6 which led to a second Dartmouth timeout. Brown did not slow down after the timeout as they closed out the match with a 25-11 third set win.
Roberts notched three kills on eight attempts while Gutz and Raeli Smith had two kills each. Mattox had six assists while both LaFata and Julia York added an assist. The duo of McCreery and Irmak Makasci combined for a block in the set. Mattox had a Dartmouth best three digs in the set while Fitzgerald and Gutz each had two digs in the set.
Gutz and Roberts each had six kills to lead Dartmouth while LaFata had five kills in the match. Mattox had 12 assists in the match; it is the fourth straight match that she has notched double digit assists. 11 different players tallied a dig in the match; Gutz led the way with nine digs while eight players had multiple digs.
The Big Green are back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Harvard. Dartmouth currently sits in seventh in the Ivy League standings at the midway mark of Ivy League play.
