HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth men's hockey team improved to 3-0-0 on the season after defeating ECAC foe Colgate 4-1 on Friday night at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green scored the first two goals of the game in 10:34 of game play. Hayden Stavroff scored his team leading fifth goal of the season at the 2:57 mark of the frame. The trio of Hank Cleaves, Cam MacDonald and Stavroff were deep in the Raider zone when Cleaves threw a pass to Stavroff in the slot. Stavroff made no mistake and made it a 1-0 game.
At the 10:34 mark of the frame, the Big Green were on the power play when CJ Foley picked up a loose puck in the Dartmouth zone and weaved his way through the Colgate penalty and deked the goalie out for his first goal of the season. Stavroff picked up the lone assist on the play as the Big Green took a 2-0 lead.
The first period saw shots be even at six with the Big Green dominating the faceoff circle by winning 12 of 16 faceoffs.
10:16 into the second period, the Big Green took a 3-0 lead as the first-years got in on the scoring. Nathan Morin fed a quick pass to Ryan Schelling who took a shot that was blocked. The loose puck came to Nikita Nikora who took a shot. The shot was stopped but the rebound came back to Schelling who shoveled home his third goal of the season. Nikora was credited with his third assist of the year while Morin picked up his first collegiate point.
Colgate got on the board less than six minutes late to make it a 3-1 lead.
The second period had 14 shots with the Big Green leading 8-6 over the Raiders, the Big Green once again controlled the faceoff circle as they went 13-8.
The Big Green got their three-goal lead back at the 7:48 mark of the third period. Colgate looked to rim the puck back to their defensemen, but Stavroff won a puck battle and a race to set up a two on one with MacDonald. Stavroff drew the defender in before feeding a perfect cross ice pass to MacDonald. MacDonald ripped home his first goal of the year while Stavroff notched his third point of the night.
Dartmouth held off the Raiders despite Colgate outshooting the Big Green 7-5 in the third period.
Roan Clarke started in net for the Big Green; he made 18 saves as he notched his second win of the season.
The Big Green dominated the faceoff circle as they went 33-22 for a 60% winning percentage. Cleaves went 13-5 in the circle while all four centers won 50% or more of their faceoffs.
Dartmouth won the special teams battle as they went 1-2 on the power play and held the Raiders to just one shot on their two power plays.
Dartmouth blocked 10 shots with Brock Cummings leading the way with three.
Stavroff has seven points through three games while Foley, Nikora, and Cleaves each have four points. Through three games, Dartmouth has nine players with multiple players and 14 players with at least a point.
Dartmouth goalies currently have a 1.33 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.
It is the second straight season that Dartmouth has started 3-0-0 and the second straight season of opening ECAC play with a win.
The Big Green are back on the ice at Thompson Arena on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7 PM as No. 17 Cornell travels to The Woods.
